James H. Cohill Obituary

James Hackman Cohill passed away at the age of 97 on March 30, 2025. Born to Thomas and Mary Julia Hackman Cohill on May 25, 1927, he was proud to call Rockville Centre, L.I., his hometown. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy just before his 18th birthday during World War II. After his military service, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Hofstra University. He began his career in advertising and marketing on Madison Avenue, rising to ad agency executive before moving over to the client side, where he became vice president of marketing at Nabisco, Inc.

He had four children with his first wife Audrey Callahan Cohill. Audrey and twin sons Clinton and Timothy predeceased him. He is survived by his son James Cohill Jr. and daughter Catherine A. Gates, as well as four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. In 1996, he married his second wife, Annette Dennigan Cohill, with whom he spent a happy retirement on Long Island and, later, in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

Jim loved the ocean and was a proficient skipper and swimmer. A marathon runner, tennis player, golfer, and a fierce opponent across a ping-pong table – he was an all-around athlete and sportsman. He is missed and will be fondly remembered for his pride in and love of family and country.

Gifts in Jim’s memory can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
