James H. Novis
August 17, 1954 – October 20, 2025
James H. Novis, age 71, passed away peacefully, with family at his side, on October 20, 2025 following a courageous battle with leukemia.
Born on August 17, 1954, James (Jim) is the son of the late Stanley J. and Lillian Novis. He was united in marriage to Jane Beyerlein on August 11, 1979, at St. Lorenz Lutheran Church, and together they recently celebrated 46 years of marriage.
Jim was a 1972 graduate of South Lake High School in St. Clair Shores. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in accounting from Michigan State University. He earned his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of Michigan Law School in 1979, and became a Certified Public Accountant in 1981.
Jim practiced as a tax attorney over the course of a distinguished career spanning more than four decades. He was a respected member of the State Bar of Michigan, where he served in various leadership roles, including Chairman of the Taxation Section and Chairman of the State and Local Committee. Jim was also an active member of the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants, contributing to its State and Local Tax Committee.
Jim was widely regarded as an authority on tax law. He was a presenter at professional conferences and seminars, and authored articles on both Michigan and federal tax matters. His expertise led him to argue significant cases before the Michigan Court of Appeals and the Michigan Supreme Court.
A dedicated member of St. Lorenz Lutheran Church, Jim lived a life grounded in faith and service. Outside of his professional work, he enjoyed traveling, nature, photography and gardening. Jim was an ardent college sports fan and cheered for both the Michigan State Spartans and the Michigan Wolverines. And above all, he enjoyed spending time with his two grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his brother, Stanley R. Novis, and his sister, Cyndi Sivley. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jane; his daughter, Sarah Novis (Christopher) Walsh; two grandchildren; and his sister, Barbara Gildersleeve.
In accordance with Jim’s wishes, a private service will take place. Rev. Brad Hubbard will officiate. Those who wish to honor his memory are invited to consider memorial contributions to St. Lorenz Lutheran Church or to a charity of their choice.
