“May your eternal light shine on us forever.”
James Luther “Pop” Whitenack, 61, of Roanoke, passed away unexpectedly on February 11, 2016, at his home. From his birth in Lansing, Michigan on August 19, 1954 until his passing, Jim brought endless joy to those around him. Soon after graduating from Dondero High School in Royal Oak, Michigan in 1972, he began what would be a three decades long career with Norfolk Southern. After retiring from the railroad, Jim’s days were spent supporting his children and grandchildren in whatever capacity was needed.
He is survived by his only son, Micah Whitenack, and two daughters, Ayisha Bailey, and Kelsey Pugh (Chris); two brothers: Michael Whitenack (Lela), Craig Whitenack (Malia); five sisters: Susan Pritchard (David), Cynthia Jenkins (Samuel), Karen Whitenack, Kristin Whitenack (John), and Melanie Whitenack; ten grandchildren: Hannah Leigh, Matthew Jaylen, Kaden Duane, Sonya Jade, Kyleigh Krin, Kohen Micah, Dawson James, Harper Glenn, Brody Michael, and Rowan James. He will also be dearly missed by William, Gail, Margaret, and William Poe Slaydon; and Michele Jarrard.
He is welcomed with open arms by loved ones who preceded him in death: parents, Duane Luther and Beverly Jean Whitenack; grandmother, Charlotte Martin; daughter, Sacsha Krin Whitenack; and grandson, Colton Michael Pugh.
A son, a brother, a father, a grandfather, an uncle, a friend, a strong man with a sensitive heart, a chef, a backyard gardener, a music lover, an avid supporter of Virginia Tech and Michigan State, a swim coach, a local and world news watcher, a supporter of all things good. Jim had a heart of gold. His family devotion, dedication to joy, and determination to enrich the lives of others will live on in our hearts.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Saturday, February 20 at 12PM at Oakey’s Downtown, 318 Church Ave SW, Roanoke. A graveside service will follow at Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive visitors from 6-8PM on Thursday, February 18, at Oakey’s.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jim’s memory may be made to Salvation Army’s Turning Point, PO Box 12088, Roanoke, 24013. Turning Point is a secure shelter for victims of domestic violence, a cause Jim held close to his heart.
Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, 540.982.2100.
