Joan Erickson Obituary

Joan Erickson left us on Wednesday, April 15th 2015. She was the fifth child (5 minutes older than her twin sister) of nine, born to Aldona and Richard in Oklahoma City, OK..

As a sister, she never failed to stick up for her siblings, even if that meant standing up to the mean boys in school. When she wasn't keeping the bullies in check, she was pretending to be a ballerina...such a diverse imagination.

Joanie insisted on graduating high school in 3 years to start her life adventures early by moving to Tucson. It was there that she fell in love with travel which eventually influenced her decision to become a travel agent.  This gave her the opportunity to experience more of the world that she longed to see.

Joanie loved and lived art and was always the happiest and most at peace when she was painting, sculpting, or sharing thoughts on artists and what that might mean . Her works hang proudly in many homes of the people who loved her most. She loved Joni Mitchell and especially Van Morrisons "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You?".

Her role as an Aunt was one that she devoted much time and love to and her generosity and kindness left a lasting impact on everyone in her life.  Those that have known her over the years will attest to her creativity and free spirit.

She most recently lived in Carol Stream, IL and is survived by her husband, William Hayes and his children Jenny, Kim, and David. She is also survived by Aunt Joann (aka Auntie Joanie); brothers: Rick, Bill, Tom and wife Angela, and Jim and (ex-wife but forever a sister-in-law) Sylvia; sisters: Sandy and husband Joe, Patti and husband Barry, Linda and Dan, and Janice; nephews: Michael, Nick, Tom and wife Sara, Steven and wife Katie, Billy, Jimmy and wife Melissa, Casey, and Daniel; nieces: Jennifer and husband Charles, Cerisse and husband Nick, and JoAnne; great-nephew Liam; great-nieces: Alanna, Hayley, Carena, and Jillian; cousin: Michael and wife Laura; and second cousin: David.

We will all miss you terribly Joanie and we wish you peacefulness in your eternal home.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, April 19, 2015 from 2:00 p.m. until the start of a memorial service to be held at 5:00 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., in Wheaton, IL. Interment will be private.

I met Joanie not long after meeting her twin sister Janice, over 20 years ago, Early on, she would often say,"life is a journey". She always looked closely at the spiritual world. Interpretive art, astrology, and even dream catchers were part of who she was. I would kid her. She, however, was likely as prepared for the spiritual world, as anyone I knew. She spent much time in those thoughts. Now that she has left the physical world, she is surely in her element. Journey on Joanie, but remember to send us back information that will help us in our continuing earthly journey.

My aunt Joanie was an amazing, beautiful, and creative woman that always found a way to make the people around her smile. When she spoke, there was genuine concern and interest in her voice. She was always willing to listen and always willing to help. What most people would find ordinary or "plain", she found fascinating. Aunt Joanie has touched so many lives, including mine and Katie's. She was truly a bright a light in our world and we should all aspire to treat each other the way she treated us. We love and miss you, Aunt Joanie. Rest in peace.

Love you Aunt Joanie...Was at the beach today with Liam and thinking about how when you came and stayed with us for Liam's first birthday you, me, Liam, Tom, and Janice all went to Newport and walked around and Tom drove us around the mansions as our tour guide. Ken and I send our deepest heartfelt sympathies to you, Janice, and to your family. I know that losing a sister, your lifelong confidant, is more devastating than words can express. I can attest that God will carry you through your grief when you feel like you don't have the strength to go on. Praise Him always for His blessing of sisters, and for His promise of eternal life through His Son, Jesus Christ.

One Summer I walked from my home across the cul-de-sac to say hello to Janice. I talked at some length at the end of which Joanie said I am not Janice, I am Joanie and I am glad to meet you. She was so beautiful, sweet and gracious. I have fond and vivid memories of Joanie even if few. Such a beautiful person to leave us too soon. My love goes out to Janice and all her family.

As I look back over the past 40 years I remember all the wonderful times I spent with this powerful loving and open Erickson Family that Joanie was part of. We all laughed hard, cried hard and even argued together. Joanie always had unique ideas and perspectives that didn't even occur to us until she shared them. She is beautiful, artistic, with sharp wit and so much gracefulness.
The comfort here is that Joanie left a little piece of her soul in everyone's heart that she touched and there were many. That beautiful smile will always be with us. Shine on Joanie in you new adventures.
Love Gail

Remembering us sitting outside in October in Alabama drinking our pumpkin ale beer and how you then and always had a smile on your face and would offer me wonderful words of advice and just let me know that Tom and I were doing a great job at parenting Liam. If I had to describe Joan in only two words those two words would be "forever young." Tom, Liam, and I love you Aunt Joannie....
