Joanne Lillis Hawker, 87
On Sunday September 19, 2021, Joanne Hawker, longtime Blackfoot resident, had her wish and desire to graduate this life fulfilled and returned home through the veil.
Joanne was born November 2, 1933, in Taber, Alberta, Canada the daughter of David Elmer Hall and Lillis Birch.
Her husband Preston served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Western Canadian Mission. Upon completion of his mission, he returned to Canada where he met Joanne and brought her back to the states. After a very short courtship, they were married July 23, 1953. A few weeks later the Idaho Falls LDS temple opened after a remodeling project and they were sealed for eternity.
Joanne was an active and devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served in various callings and always looked for ways to serve others and take meals to those in need. She was very devoted to her family and was found many times along side her husband milking cows. There was never a weed that was safe when Joanne was around. She loved her flowers and garden.
Survivors include her six children, Scott (Patricia) Hawker, Doyle (Susan) Hawker, Valerie (Jerry) Bingham, Perry (Margo) Hawker, Tracy (Becky) Hawker, all of Blackfoot, and Cheryl (Ross) Foster of Shelley, 28 grandchildren and 62 great grandchildren and her sister Sharon Noack Lindquist, of Spokane, WA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her twin great grandsons Gus and Max Bingham, siblings, LaVonne, Marion, Louise and Blaine Hall.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 23, at the Blackfoot West Stake Center, 101 N 900 W, Blackfoot, Idaho.The family will meet with friends on Wednesday evening at the Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave. from 6-8 p.m. and again at the church for an hour prior to services. Funeral services will be broadcast and can be viewed at: www.hawkerfuneralhome.com/page/broadcasting. Interment will be in the Riverside-Thomas Cemetery.
Joanne’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the wonderful staff at Gem Village where she was cared for and treated like a queen. Also a thank you to her hospice nurses Chantelle and Susan.

So sorry for your loss, so happy for your parents reuniting. I’m sure they’ve missed each other so much! I’m also sure your all happy for them too! She was a wonderful lady and leaves behind a thoughtful, hard working, generous, and talented generation to carry on.

To me she was always Nana.
Here are some of my fondest memories
Christmas Eve was always at her house when I was a child with all of the extended family. I remember her favorite color blue lights on the house, a flocked tree, also with blue lights, homemade piñatas, gifts, lots of laughs, and most of all LOVE!
Her policy was the door is always open. You don’t need to knock, just come in. Her heart was the same.
No one could go buy the house and not be offered food, most of the time it was placed in front of you whether you wanted it or not.
I remember my nickname was Sauce. Not only with her, but also Papa and all of their kids. I have no idea why but it stuck. It is now a term of endearment to me that I rarely hear, but nostalgia floods in whenever I do.
Hard work. I never saw her sleep. She always worked hard, on the farm, in the yard, in the home, wherever she went. Weeds stood no chance in her yard or any other she visited for that matter.
Toot Toot, she would say when I happened to be in her way and she needed me to move.
I remember how she loved watermelon. Or at least I assume she did. She always had it, offered it to others, and ate it regularly.
I love her chocolate cake!
Always a lady!
Beautiful strong, fearless, and able to hold her own in any situation.
Her laugh.
When I was three years old I was at her home and had an accident. She was working in the yard burning weeds and I, out with her, fell into the fire catching myself with my left hand, and was burned. The scar I have carried on my left wrist from then on, is now a part of me and a constant reminder of her. I cherish it because I cherish her.
My favorite memory of her however, is hands down, her unconditional love. She expressed it so easily in so many ways. To me charity describes it best. The highest, noblest, strongest kind of love. Not merely affection, the pure love of Christ. The opposite of selfish, putting God and others before yourself. Not just a feeling, but a state of the will. I know no other person that has loved as well as she. She understood and lived the greatest two commandments in the law. (Matthew 22: 36-39) And by so doing, has fulfilled the law (Romans 13:8) Love is the fulfilling of the law. (Romans 13:10) Thank you for teaching me this and sharing your love with me.

Very sad to hear of Auntie Joanne's passing. Thinking of you all! She had such a genuine way of making sure people were taken care of and making them feel good about themselves. I was on the receiving end of her letters, love and cooking countless times over the years. I feel so richly blessed to have so many beautiful memories with her. I wrote the card so fast I didn't point out the love and respect we have for your mom. She was such a wonderful influence in our lives, and your dad as well. She was so gracious and kind, and in her presence you felt like you were the most important person in her life. She truly possessed the attributes our Father in Heaven sent us here to develop. Your mother was a sweet, kind, compassionate lady that we were blessed to know. My thoughts are with all of you Hawker family members. I’m so sorry for your loss but grateful for her to be with her eternal companion once again. What a marvelous reunion that must have been. Your mom has always had a special spot in my heart and my family’s heart. She helped take care of us young kids when our mom passed away.

Sister Hawker was an absolute angel. She was always so kind to me. When I was working at the funeral home, if we ever had a funeral in the Pingree chapel, after the service started, she would whisper to us boys to follow her to the kitchen where she fed us some of the yummy ham and funeral potatoes. Working at the funeral home meant starting at 7am on funeral days and not stopping until late afternoon without a break. So, those kind thoughtful meals meant so much to me. She will be missed, but it has been a long time for her without her husband. (Her children are just like her and have also been very kind to me. I love you all and my thoughts are with you.)
