John Impens Obituary

John Matthew Impens, 52, of Overland Park, KS passed away after a courageous battle with melanoma on January 6, 2020.  Funeral mass will be held 10:00 am Friday, January 10th at Church of the Ascension, 9510 W. 127th St., Overland Park, KS.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to John Impens Memorial Fund for his children, c/o (Sunflower Bank, 7400 W. 135th St., Overland Park, KS 66223).

John was born June 24, 1967 in Berwyn, IL to John J. and Patricia Impens.  He was raised in LaGrange Park, IL and graduated from St. Joseph High School, Westchester, IL.  John was a graduate of the University of Kansas and received his Master of Business Administration from University of Missouri-Kansas City.  He worked in commercial banking for Sunflower Bank.

John was involved with The Boy Scouts of America, Troop 218 Overland Park, KS at Ascension.  He was the troop treasurer.  He loved camping with his boys and setting them on a path to become fine young men.  John, known by his many KU friends as “Rowdy”, loved college basketball, especially the Jayhawks-Rock Chalk.  He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed following the Chicago Blackhawks and Chiefs.

John was patient, giving and always willing to help wherever he could.  But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, whether it was simple moments at home with them or traveling on vacations.  His boys loved when he would take them out on special outings such as a movie, lunch at Freddy’s or DQ for Blizzards.  He enjoyed grilling out and smoking ribs for his boys.  He loved building bon fires in the back yard with his sons on cool evenings.  John spent many weekends on the deck with his family enjoying a nice meal, beer or glass of wine.  John believed the meaning of life was a collection of all the small, wonderful moments and experiences spent with family and friends.  He needed nothing more.  He was the best husband and father, always going above and beyond to make certain they were happy and taken care of.  John was a good friend to all and someone you could count on any time.

John’s favorite band was The Grateful Dead…  “In a bed, in a bed, by the waterside I will lay my head
Going home, going home, by the riverside I will rest my bones
Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul.”

John is survived by his wife, Heather; sons, Schuyler and Jack; his parents; sister, Gail Gnatovic and husband Mark; several nieces and nephews and many other extended family.

I used to crack up at Johns March madness routines...taking time off work to watch TV and scream for the Jayhawks. So sorry for your familys loss. Dont know why, but my kids called him Snickerdoodle when they were little...they are adults now and still refer to him that way.

I had the opportunity of spending my sophomore year at residing at Oliver Hall at KU. The 4th floor, was known as "The Zoo". During this time, I met John, whose nick name was given, "Rowdy". What an amazing, caring and very funny person. So many good memories. I will just share that both John and I had a short lived routine of watching "The Monkees" tv series. I remember him saying, "This so dumb, but funny. Why am I watching this?", as he was laughing. His smile was contagious. We met up again during a 'reunion' at KU, a few years ago. It was so nice seeing and visiting with him. I'm so glad that I was able to hook up with him again, because I was able to give him back the binoculars that he lent me back in the Fall of 86, when I was going to a John Cougar Mellencamp concern. When I gave them to him, he said that he forgot. He was kind about it. John has a gental and caring spirit. Rowdy will always have a special place in heart. Carry on amigo!

Heather, Schuyler, and Jack,

I am so sorry that you are experiencing this loss. I pray you feel God's comfort now and in the days to come. A piece of your heart will be waiting in Heaven, and one day you will be whole again. Until then, know that you are surrounded by family and friends - near and far - that are praying for you, will be your strength when you need it, a shoulder, a hug, a meal...whatever you need. John will be missed.

Love you,

Andra, Robert, Dylan and Garrett Morphew
