John Francis Smith, age 70, of Homewood, formerly of Beverly, Chicago, and Portage, Indiana. Beloved husband of the late Carole Ann Smith (nee Hamann). Loving father of Allison (Bill) MacDonald and Noreen (Shane) Rutledge. Devoted grandfather to Lincoln, Fitzgerald, Elle, Henry, William, and Bennett. Dear son of the late Frances Smith (nee Bailey) and late John Francis Smith. Cherished brother of Dr. Carol Hammond, Linda Smith, Susan Smith, late James Smith, Frances (Edward) Brindle, Thomas Smith and Michael (Jennifer) Smith. Loving uncle to many loving nieces and nephews.
John was born in Chicago on March 4, 1955. He grew up in Beverly with his family and attended Saint John Fisher Roman Catholic Church. For high school, he went to Brother Rice in Chicago, where John played football, and later would attend Portage High School after his family moved out of the city. After graduation, John traveled and took on many positions that would lead to discovering his love for construction.
For over 35 years, John took great pride in his work as a foreman and contractor, known for his strong work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to doing the job right. Whether building homes, renovating spaces, or helping family and friends with renovations, John believed in his craft and stood behind every project he was awarded. His craftsmanship can be seen throughout the community, leaving a lasting legacy built not only of structures, but of trust and reliability.
John was the fourth of eight children, the firstborn son. His steadfast love for his family showed in his every action. He enjoyed sports, playing Little League coached by his father, family trips to Sister Lakes, Michigan, and playing with the family dog, Misty.
He married Carole in 1987 and resided in Hazel Crest. The same year, they were blessed with Allison, and Noreen two years after. Together, they made lasting family memories in Odgen Dunes, where his parents resided. As time went on, John’s family was spread throughout the country. The family made many visits to John’s parents and family members, cities such as Hot Springs, Arkansas; Salem, Oregon; Miami, Florida; Raleigh, North Carolina; Berkley, California; and more. These trips turned into a lifetime of cherished family memories, where John glowed with happiness.
As a father, John provided a loving, supportive childhood for Allison and Noreen. He showered them with love and affection throughout their childhood. As John’s family grew, his devotion followed suit. As a loving Grandfather, his grandchildren became his main focus. John took on his grandfatherly responsibility with a sense of adventure, encouraging them to play, fly model airplanes, fish, hike, and explore the world around them.
A lover of music, nature, and reading, John also found strength and community with his Thursday night group and best friend, Nancy Baker. The camaraderie and support from friends were truly cherished. Through communication and his faith, John strived for a happy, healthy, well-rounded life. Resting at the Tews Funeral Home 18230 Dixie Highway in Homewood, on Saturday, February 7, from 2pm until the time of Service at 6:30pm For additional information, contact 708-798-5300.

John,
We appreciate everything you did to make life better for our best friends at the park. It was a privilege getting to know you and Maddie (even if the bird feeders drove me nuts). You showed solidarity when we needed you and that won't be forgotten. Heaven is ready for a full remodel. May they have your music playing and lots of tools waiting for you. Our hearts go out to the Smith family and Nancy during this difficult time. While we did not know about the service, please know John will be remembered by many of us whenever we look across a much more beautiful and lot less flooded Rovers Run; thank you John.
