Joseph S. “Joe” Cariello, 76 of East Haven died peacefully surrounded by loved ones on May 9, 2025. Mr. Cariello was born in New Haven on July 22, 1948, to the late Giovanni and Rose Gambero Cariello. Joe was also predeceased by his beloved sister Anna Marie Cariello.
Prior to his death, he was the executive director of the Beth-El Center, overseeing the care and wellbeing of the homeless. He devoted thirty years of his life working in social services, securing grants, organizing fundraiser events and donations for the sick, poor and homeless.
Joe was well known throughout town and cherished his time conversing and having coffee with his friends, he loved cheering for the New York teams.
Joe leaves a lot of friends, neighbors and people who loved him, especially his companion of thirty years Cynthia Harrison, his goddaughter Shayla Batson, and her sister Chloe Batson. Papa Joe’s kindness, compassion, and love for them will always be fondly remembered by them and their parents.
Friends are invited to calling hours at East Haven Memorial Funeral Home 425 Main St. East Haven on Friday May 16, 2025, from 830am-930am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Blessed Michael McGivney Parish at St. Michael Church 29 Wooster Pl New Haven at 10am. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Joe and I helped set up one of the first Pre-Trial Diversion programs in the Country. Back then, everyone thought we were nuts, but with President Nixon's LEAA funding, today, these programs are in just about every criminal court in every State. Joe is one of those unsung heroes!

Dear Cynthia, Samantha, Chloe & Anthony
We are so sorry of the loss of your Friend & Companion, Joe. (friend, Godfather to Shayla and Papa Joe to Chloe & Shayla). We will remember the many years of spending Christmas Eve Dinners at Joe's house.
