It was my great honor to have had Joe as a sax student & founding member of the jazz ensemble at Tewksbury High. Joe was a natural who could pick up any woodwind and take to it instantly. My teaching years were few but the ones that sparkled were the years when Joe was a member of any group I was fortunate enough to have been involved with. I am saddened and yet cherish those memories. Let us rejoice in the memory of those who enrich our lives without really knowing how much. RIP brother.

My deepest condolences to Joe’s family.
I am a long time friend of Joe’s. I first met Joe 42 years ago when we were both college students working as security guards. Joe was without a doubt the most unique person I ever met.
I was both amazed by and jealous of his razor sharp intellect, as well as his depth of knowledge on virtually any topic.
I was amused by his quirks, and I knew them well because Joe and I were roommates for 5 years.
I was constantly entertained by his incredible (sometimes bizarre) sense of humor and his rapid fire wit.
But most of all I was grateful for his friendship, his companionship, his thoughtfulness, his generosity.
I consider Joe to be one of the best friends I have made in my lifetime, and I am a richer person for having had the privilege of calling him my friend.
Rest Easy Joe.
Mike

Deepest condolences to the entire Defina family. I have so many fond memories of Joe during and after our college years at ULowell. Joe had a quick sense of humor, one of the funniest people I have ever met. I remember Joe enjoying ballantine ale and he was always able to quickly decipher the puzzle on the cap. RIP Joe, it was an honor to know you.
