The date of one’s birth marks the beginning of life and the date of death denotes the day on which one is transformed from mortality to immortality. The dash in between signifies the time spent on earth which is commonly referred to as life. Life for Joseph Thomas Wilson, Jr. began on April 26, 1942 in Charlotte, NC. He was born to Margaret and Joseph Thomas Wilson, Sr. He was a blessing and continued to be a blessing throughout his life.
Joseph, affectionately called “Joe”, received his early education in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System. He attended York Road High School and graduated in the first graduating class of 1959. After graduating he enlisted in the United States Army and completed his service with an honorable discharge. He returned home, worked as a part time medic transporter and enrolled at Central Piedmont Community College; engaging in medical curriculum for Licensed Practical Nursing; however there was an unrest in his spirit, he realized that was not the calling God had for his life.
As he often said, I want to be in God’s perfect will.
He was preceded in death by his loving mother, Margaret Whitaker Wilson; father, Joseph Thomas Wilson Sr.; an infant daughter, Nicole Thomas; sister Mattie D. Coleman, and brother, Edward Mason.
He leaves to continue the celebration of his life sister, Barbara W. Hendrix; special nephew and one of his previous caregivers, Kareem A. Hendrix; great nephew, Xavier M. Hendrix, other nieces, nephews, and cousins to cherish his memories.
With God’s help, these were some of your many achievements:
First black Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America receiving the Eagle Scout Badge.
Master’s Degree in Divinity form Arlin Smith Bible College
First black Mecklenburg County Police Officer
& of all the achievements, your relationship with Christ Jesus took priority and souls being saved was your passion.

Although I did not have the privilege of knowing Mr. Wilson personally, I am deeply grateful for his service to both our country and our community. The remarkable contributions he made during his lifetime surely came through perseverance and resilience. I imagine he faced many challenges, yet remained steadfast in his commitment to excellence and to creating a more inclusive world. His bravery and dedication leave a lasting legacy. May he rest in peace, and may his loved ones find comfort and joy in the memories they hold of him.
