Karen Theresa Horner, 65, of Lynn, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, compassion, and love.
Born on April 26, 1960, to James Weldon Horner, Sr. and Mamie Lou “Helen” Horner, Karen grew up in Dorchester, Massachusetts.
A proud graduate of Lexington High School, Class of 1978, Karen carried her passion for education and equity throughout her life and career, largely shaped by the legacy of those before her.
Karen’s life was grounded in integrity and an unwavering commitment to justice. She dedicated her career to public service and advocacy, serving with distinction at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, where she worked tirelessly to advance justice and equality.
She later joined the Massachusetts Teachers Association, where she served for nearly three decades. Her leadership and dedication were recognized in 2003 when she received the Human and Civil Rights Award. In more recent years, she served as union president, earning the respect and admiration of colleagues across the organization.
Karen embodied a deep sense of purpose and duty to family and community. She found joy in activism, the arts, music, cooking, gardening, and reflective walks along the beach.
Above all, she cherished time spent with her granddaughters, Janessa and Olivia who brought her immense pride and joy. She took great pride in encouraging others to realize their full potential. Her generous spirit touched those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Karen is predeceased by parents James W. Horner, Sr. and Mamie Lou “Helen” Horner; James Horner, Jr. (brother); and Janis Horner (sister).
She is survived by her beloved sons, Kyle Horner of Lynn and Errol James Horner of Beverly; granddaughters, Janessa Horner-Barbosa and Olivia Nash; sisters, Sandra Matthews, Linda Goode, and Rosalind Horner; and a host of family, friends, and colleagues who will forever carry her spirit, wisdom, and grace in their hearts.

Karen was such a great person. When I went back to the MTA Boston office, she took my job in Lynnfield. Every time she would call me with a question about the office, we would end up laughing!
Rest in peace, Karen.

Karen was my administrative assistant in the Legal Services Division at the MTA. She was among the smartest people that I have ever met. She was also kind, funny and wise. We shared a love for Donny Hathaway’s music and I will think of her whenever I hear one of his songs. The world is diminished now that she is gone.

I remember Karen’s giggle as a child. Whenever I saw her she always had a genuine smile. As life often does, we move in opposite directions but always remember those things that remind us of home, and those that we love. I pray that her children and grandchildren find comfort in the memories they share and the peace of knowing that she is resting in perfect peace.
Love,
Bridget Porter
