So saddened to hear of Karens' passing. I worked with her when she was a ward clerk at the hospital (MMSC). She always had a smile and did her job well. She will certainly be missed. RIP Karen.

So sorry to hear of Karen's passing. I knew her a little when she worked as a ward clerk at MMSC. I knew her health had declined while there. She was a nice lady.

Karen Schmellik, 73, of Marshalltown, Iowa passed away on February 28, 2017 at Oakview Nursing Home in Conrad, Iowa.
Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 3, 2017, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown followed by a short graveside at 11:00 a.m. at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens in Marshalltown. Karen L Wilkerson was born in Marshalltown, Iowa; she was the daughter of Frank and Helen “Peg” (Reiss) Wilkerson. She attended school in the Gilman school and then graduated from Marshalltown Community School District with the Class of 1962. Karen was united in marriage to Don Westphal and they later divorced, she then married Darwin Schmellik. Karen had worked at Fisher Controls and MMSC. She enjoyed crafts and in her younger years she enjoyed fishing. She loved and enjoyed family time.
Left to cherish her memory is her son, Richard (Tina) Westphal of Marshalltown, Iowa; grandchild, Justin Westphal, step-grandchildren, John Schatzman and Jennifer Fleming; great grandchildren: Liam Fleming, Kayla Fleming and Ainsligh Schatzman.
In death Karen rejoins her parents, Frank and Helen and husband, Darwin.
