Kathleen Acton-Mason, of Monongahela, passed away on February 25, 2026 from natural causes at McMurray Hills Manor in Peters Township. She was born January 11, 1949 in North Charleroi, a daughter of Thomas and Emmeline Oxner Acton.
Kind, generous, friendly, flirty, and always genuinely herself, Kathy will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She was a 1967 graduate of Monongahela High School, and worked at Hill’s Restaurant in New Eagle for over 30 years. Kathy had the gift of gab and would talk to anyone about anything. It wasn’t uncommon to see her strike up a conversation with a total stranger. Kathy loved cats and had many feline companions over the years, adopting from various rescues and taking in any cat that otherwise needed a home.
Kathy was a dedicated grandmother and loved nothing more than spending time with her grandsons, Chad Jr. and Charles. She delighted in family dinners and was often the loudest voice in a room full of loud people. Kathy also enjoyed family vacations to The Bahamas and attended bar bingo at the VFW for many years with her husband and sister.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald “Monk” Mason; sister, Karen Acton Rice; nephew, Ron Pellegrini; and son, Chad Barber, Sr., who passed away in 2007.
Kathy is survived by her son, Richard Barber and his partner, Michael Scott, of Pittsburgh; niece, Amanda Filipcic-Godsey and her husband, Ryan Godsey, of Canonsburg; daughter-in-law, Amelia Barber of Pittsburgh; and two grandsons, Chad Barber, Jr. & Charles Yoder of Pittsburgh, who were the light of her life. Kathy sincerely loved and will be sorely missed by members of the Acton, Oxner, and Mason families, as well as a lifetime of friends.
Friends will be received on Monday, March 2, 2026 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM in the Frye Funeral Home, 427 W Main Street, Monongahela, where a Blessing Service will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026 at 11:00 AM with Deacon Alexander Poroda officiating. Interment will follow in Monongahela Cemetery, Monongahela.
