Kay Baker Floyd passed away on July 16, 2023 in Florence, South Carolina surrounded by family.
She was born in Timmonsville, South Carolina on February 17, 1934. She graduated from Saint Mary’s College in Raleigh, North Carolina and the University of South Carolina. She peacefully left behind a legacy of great accomplishments and a large loving family. She will be remembered for her great admiration of her family, the South Carolina Gamecocks, and traveling the world with her husband. Kay always set an example to those around her to see the good in everything and everyone with whom she crossed paths in her lifetime. Kay ran one of the largest farming operations in the state of South Carolina and was business manager for one of the first vascular laboratories in South Carolina. She also made great contributions to Florence as well as the state of South Carolina which led to the naming of the Floyd Conference Center in Florence, South Carolina and the Kay and Eddie Floyd Football building at Williams Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina. She was a founding member of Arts Alive at Francis Marion University. She will continue to be remembered for them in the future. She took pride in being able to host many important figures in her home including Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, Former First Lady Laura Bush, Senators Strom Thurmond, John McCain, Lindsay Graham, Jim DeMint, and Bill Frisk, Governor Nikki Haley, current Governor Henry McMaster and UN Ambassador John Bolton, Andrew Card and Andrew Young.
She was involved and was a member of many organizations during her lifetime. Just a few of those are University of South Carolina Delta Delta Delta sorority, the C&S Bank Advisory Board, the Tarantella, Bay Blossom Garden Club, Meals on Wheels, and St. John’s Church in Florence, South Carolina.
Mrs. Floyd was preceded in death by her parents Hazel Coleman Baker and Andrew William Baker; her brother, William Andrew “Billy” Baker, Jr.; grandsons, Cecil Edward “Trey” Floyd, III and Keith William “Billy” Buckhouse, Jr.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Cecil Edward “Eddie” Floyd, daughter, Coleman Floyd Buckhouse (Keith); son, Cecil Edward “Bubby” Floyd Jr.; daughter, Emory Kay “Sissy” Floyd; grandsons, Joseph Edward “Mac” Getz (Melissa), Paul Baker Getz (Brenna), Edward Joseph “Eddie” Buckhouse, George Derrick Floyd; granddaughters, Martha Floyd Thompson (Hunter), Margaret Riley “Daisy” Buckhouse, Katherine Kay “Kay Kay” Getz, and Emery Anne Buckhouse; brother Hugh Baker (Ellen), and sister-in-law, Emaline Baker.
Due to construction at the sanctuary at St. John’s, the funeral service for Kay Baker Floyd will be held on July 20, 2023 at 11:30 am at The Francis Marion University Performing Arts Center, 201 South Dargan Street. Visitation preceding the service will be held at 10:00 am at St. John’s Church Parish Hall, 252 South Dargan Street. A private burial will follow the service. Services are directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels of Florence, c/o The Senior Citizens Association, 600 Senior Way, Florence, South Carolina, 29505; Saint Mary’s School, 900 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, North Carolina, 27603; St. John’s Church, 252 South Dargan Street, Florence, South Carolina, 29501; or charity of one’s choice.
