Kenneth Lyle Heckathorn

1953 - 2025

Kenneth Lyle Heckathorn, age 72 of Nappanee, IN, passed away Tuesday evening, December 30, 2025 at his residence surrounded by his family.  Kenneth was born on March 16, 1953 in New Castle, PA to Robert and Ruth (Edeburn) Heckathorn. Before moving to the Nappanee area when he was in 1st grade, Ken’s family briefly lived in Albuquerque, NM.  He graduated from NorthWood High School in 1971. After graduating from NWHS, Kenneth enlisted in the military and was sent to Germany during the Vietnam war in October 1971.He served as an MP and after 3 years he returned to the states and then later re-enlisted in the military and worked as an instructor. He trained soldiers for combat and instructed MP school. He later worked serving veterans, helping them find employment and benefits.During his time in the service, he was stationed abroad in Germany, Panama and Puerto Rico. He enjoyed serving his country and had many achievements and received several awards, retiring as SFC. Upon retirement, Ken was an active member of the Nappanee American Legion Post 154.He was a former post commander and third district commander. Through his role with the legion, Ken was also active in the Boys State Program.Ken enjoyed serving at the Legion.  On August 24, 1984, Ken married Wanda Harter in Wakarusa, and a few years later they built their family home and raised their family in it. Ken was a member of the Bethel Missionary Church and served the congregation as Deacon, usher, and in many other capacities.  Ken enjoyed his coffee and John Wayne movies.  He could often be found reading World War era books. He also enjoyed making improvements to their home and spoiling the grandkids. He loved his family and will be greatly missed. Kenneth is survived by his wife of over 41 years, Wanda Heckathorn of Nappanee; 3 children: Lisa (Daniel)  Kim of Goshen, IN, Elizabeth (Jordan) Graber of Goshen, and Andrew (Christine) Heckathorn of Wakarusa; 7 grandchildren: Sarah Kim, Riley Kim, Brooke Graber, Hannah Graber, Maryssa Heckathorn, Eli Heckathorn, and Logan Myers; 2 brothers: Gary (Lois) Heckathorn of Eldon, MO and Steve (Dawn) Heckathorn of Nappanee; and 1 sister, Barbara Furkin of Cincinnati, OH.  Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be held from 9-11 am on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at Bethel Missionary Church (63473 Co Rd 7, Goshen, IN 46526). A funeral service will begin at 11 am at the church with Pastor Joel Gentz officiating. Military Rites will follow and then a private family graveside service will be held at South Union Cemetery, Nappanee. Memorial contributions in Ken’s name can be given to Bethel Missionary Church or American Legion Post #154.
