LaMae's Obituary

LaMae Shaw, 92 of Mathews, VA , Passed on Wednesday morning 11/12/2025 , at 5 a.m.while under the care of Hospice at Riverside Convalesnt center.  LaMae will long be remembered as a strong, adventurous,  creative soul.  She was always creating something whether it be a healthy meal made from scratch, an extraordinarily  ornate  crocheted bedspread, she made handmade dolls for the grandchildren, also dozens and dozens of quilts, she  preserved  food by canning , freezing and dehydrating anything and everything.   When she was done with all that she decided she would visit  every state in the United States in her 60's  and she did just that.  She decided she was going to try her hand at painting on canvas and she painted every lighthouse up and down the east coast.  She helped to establish an art gallery in Mathews and  all the local artists had a place to display  their work.She opened and ran an assisted living for several years alongside her oldest daughter , Barbara. She lived overseas ,in Hamburg, Germany , for many, many years with her husband George. She was a member of All Saints Anglican Church in Saluda , Va .   You could say with assurance that she was a woman of substance.LaMae was preceded in death by her parents Fred Errett Hamm and Mary W."Renie" Hamm of Tom's Creek in Coeburn, Va. sister, JoAnn Meadows of Baltimore, Md.Brother, Kyle Hamm of Round Lake Beach, Illinois, brother , Jack Hamm of Coeburn, daughter, Belinda Hale Wright, of North, Va.,former spouse, Douglas Hale of Coeburn, Va., Grandsons Bobbie Cassell of Gloucester,  Va., and Jimi Charles of Big Stone Gap, Va.,  sister, Jean Sartin ,86,of Coeburn passed away  just two days prior .  LaMae wouldn't have wanted it any other way but to join her little sister .  She always loved having a traveling companion.  La Mae is survived by her husband of 62 years , George Shaw of Mathews, Va., sister and brother in law Lois and Gene Hussey of Carlsbad , California,  daughter and son in law  Barbara and Wayne Buchanan of Haliford , Va., son and daughter in law , David and  Libbey Hale of Coeburn, daughter, Marlene Charles of Coeburn, daughter Marsha Viers of Abingdon, Va.,and 13 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 9  great great grandchildren . Her  legacy lives on through her children and children's childrenArrangements for a celebration of life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers we ask that you donate to charity of your choice.
