Larry Atkins, Sr. Obituary

Larry Joseph Atkins,Sr., 50 of Columbus, MS passed away Friday, April 17th, 2020, at his residence, surrounded by his family, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. 


A graveside service for family will be held Tuesday, April 21st, 2020, at 10:00 AM, at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Millport, AL, with Lowndes Funeral Home directing. Friends may view the service online at www.lowndesfuneralhome.net the following day. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date for family and friends. 


Mr. Atkins was born September 27th, 1969, to the late Jack and Myrtie May Wooten Atkins, Sr., in Columbus, MS. He served his city proudly as an employee of Columbus Light and Water Department for 30 years and currently held the position of lead foreman over the wastewater division. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved his family and enjoyed spending as much time as possible with them. He especially enjoyed keeping his grandchildren. Above all, he was a faithful  Christian man and served as a dedicated member and deacon of Union Chapel Baptist Church, Ethelsville, AL. Even through his illness, he took every opportunity to praise our Savior and enjoyed preaching the gospel whenever provided with the opportunity. 


He is survived by his children- Lindsey Atkins, Northport, AL, Larry (Laura) Atkins, Jr., Columbus, MS, and Lance Atkins, Columbus, MS; sisters- Christine (Paul) Taylor, Steens, MS, Brenda (David) Acks, Marietta, GA, and Theresa (Kenneth) Pate, Columbus, MS; brothers- Jack Atkins, Jr., Steens, MS, and Tony Atkins, Steens, MS; grandchildren- Larry Atkins III, Hallie Atkins, and Carson Atkins; and a number of nieces and nephews. 


Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
