Leo Barbour Obituary

Leo Franklin Barbour, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on December 23, 2020; after an eighteen-year battle with prostate cancer. Born on September 7, 1934 and after retiring at age 65 from the I.B.E.W. Local 1340; Leo also known as “Uncle Leo” lived life to its fullest.

Leo was an adventurer/explorer, and had an exceptional love for seafood. His travels took him all over the world. Leo enjoyed the outdoors, the fresh “warm” air, and the serenity of peaceful beaches. He believed in the Lord Jesus, a “simple life”, (not materialistic); and good old-fashioned conversations with family and friends. His biggest enjoyment was playing the stock market, and in his younger years tinkering with cars. If you needed something fixed, just ask- he could fix anything!

Leo was preceded in death by his ex-wife and high school sweetheart Rose Marie Barbour; parents, Thelbert Barbour, Fannie and stepfather Waverly Wood. Leo left behind his daughters, Venus Toler (Gary) of Smithfield, Vickie Barbour of Newport News, Linda Gunter (Wayne) of Smithfield; his son, Jon Barbour of Newport News; granddaughter, Angelique Sage (Nathan) of Newport News; three great-grandchildren, Destin, Chase, and Ryland; his brothers, Ryland “Bobby” Barbour (Barbara) of Poquoson; and Dennis Barbour of Hampton; and many other nieces; and stepchild Rhonda (Tony) of Memphis, TN; and many other step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home on Monday, December 28, 2020 from 4-5:30PM. A graveside service will be held at Hampton Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, December 29 at 2PM. To leave online condolences please visit rhaydensmith.com

Our father asked that in lieu of flowers, to please donate to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital so those kids may have a wonderful chance in life.

Dad, what about that Mum! I know you are sitting outside and admiring it. Hopefully mom and you are reliving your youths in heaven. Rye grass coming up. Should get green and luscious very soon. Will be back out next week to put out Halloween flags.
Miss you. With Love

Happy Birthday Dad!

Wow, today would be your 91st Birthday. Although you are no longer here with us physically, your spirit is within our hearts every minute of the day. The lord knew that it was time for you to go start your new life with the angles, mom, and other family and friends. We really miss you.
Boy, we are having some much nicer weather. Although you would prefer for it to stay warm. Still, take this special day and take a scroll along the beach. Have some nice seafood with family and friends. Sit back and talk about the "good old days".
Love always, your daughter Linda
PS: Wayne says hello and Happy Birthday! ENJOY

Hi Dad
Happy Memorial Day!
I don't think that I ever told you "Thank You", your father, and brothers for their service. We all would not have the life and freedom that we have today.
With all my love, enjoy your day. Relax on a beach with mom, family and friends.

Today was a very sad day for all-we lost you. I know that you are reliving your youth as Wayne would say. Hi Dad,
Hope Mom and you have been reliving life to it's fullest. On Saturday, October 12th we have lost your brother Dennis. I know that you have opened your doors and welcomed him with open arms. Carl Murphy, Dennis and you can talk shop now. While Peggy and Mom lay out on the beach.
On another note: I'm sorry that I have not written to you as I was unaware that I could write to you. I hope that you like the way that I have been keeping things up at the gravesite. The winter grass was coming up so nice;however we are in need of some rain. Thank you for all that you have done for us through the years. You definitely were a fighter, just the cancer was too unforgiving.
All my Love

This is a tough one for me. Leo was my stepfather from the age of 12 and for many many years after. He was a humble, selfless man who was always willing to help anyone at anytime. His free spirit and sense of wonder about literally everything in life always amazed me. Leo was one of a kind, a rare gem in this crazy world, and a ray of sunshine in my life and the lives of my husband Tony and my children. We will always think fondly of Leo and love and miss him tremendously for the rest of our lives. Our deepest, heartfelt condolences to his children and his extended family.
