Lillie Spivey Hannel Barnes, 84, of Brunswick Co., NC, died Thursday, February 12, 2026, at Universal Health Care of Brunswick.
She was born on February 16, 1941, in Columbus County, NC, the daughter of the late Joseph Garland Spivey and Charlotte McCumbee Spivey. Also remembered is her first husband, Fredrick Charles Hannel, Jr.; her second husband, Charles Barnes; two children, Debra Ann Hern and James Allen Hannel; one brother, James Miles Spivey; two sisters, Annie Pearl Sarvis and Margaret Ann Baujon; two grandsons, Daniel Hern and Mason Verdugo; and one granddaughter, Rochelle Ludwig, all who preceded her in death.
Surviving is her daughter, Amelia Ludwig; her son, Tony Joe Cartrette (Wilma); grandchildren, Renee Hannel, Bradley Hannel, James Hannel II, T.J. Cartrette, Crystal Cartrette, Michael Cartrette, J.D. Hern, Travis Hern, Elizabeth Ludwig Verdugo, Candace Ludwig Tedesco, Joseph Ludwig II, Angie Ludwig Clayton (B.J. Barbara Jean); numerous great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Lillie was a member of First Baptist Church of Woodburn for many years. She retired from the Brunswick Co. Dept. of Social Services where she worked for thirty years. She was a member of the NC State Social Services Association and former president of the Women on Mission at First Baptist Church.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, February 19, 2026, at Andrews Mortuary Market Chapel with Pastor G. A. Griffith officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 pm prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Joseph Ludwig II, J.D. Hern, Travis Hern, Trevor Daniel Hern, Hunter Drake Hern, James Allen Hannel II, and Bradley Hannel.

Tony, Lee and family, I am so sorry about Ms Lillie. She was my Mama’s best friend and helped me through losing my Mama. I just saw this and I can’t be there today but I will have you all in my thoughts and prayers.
