Lola Griffin Nye
On July 16, 2020, Lola Griffin Nye went to heaven to be with her Lord and her “Shug”. She was born December 25, 1928 and raised in Fairmont, NC. Her parents were Jasper Cornelius Griffin and Ruth Andrews Griffin. She was the youngest of the family with five sisters and 3 step brothers who all spoiled her. Lola graduated from Fairmont High School and attended East Carolina University until she met the love of her life, her “Shug”, Rufus Rockwell Nye, Jr and married him January 1, 1950. They were married for 37 wonderful years until his passing in July 1988.
Her life was devoted to her heavenly father, husband, family and friends. She loved being a homemaker and staying home raising her children. Later in her life she worked as a teacher’s assistant in the Robeson County School System and a hospital volunteer. She was a devote Christian and longtime active member of Orrum Baptist Church where she was on many committees, served as Secretary, and taught a Sunday School class.
Lola left behind a legacy, she is survived by one son and two daughters: Jasper Nye of Arrat, VA, Ruth Ann (Greg) Struble of Wilmington NC, Beth (Mark) Johnson of Charlotte, NC; eight much-loved grandchildren [Angie (Pat) Czeck, Mendy (Chris) Melton, Sammy (Meredith) Nye, Blair (Chris) Deen, Kelly (Michael) Ensley, Wells (Kelly) Struble, Zack Johnson, Alex Johnson] and eight great grandchildren [Braxtyn, Gwen and Coltyn Melton; Joseph and Charlotte Nye; Noah and Kate Ensley; James Deen] and nieces and nephews who she treated like her own children.
In the last 10 years she moved to be closer to her girls and has lived in Charlotte, Raleigh and Wilmington. Lola had many passions in life: sitting in her Shug’s lap; spending time with her family; being a momma and Grandma; eating ice cream; working in her yard; canning vegetables for her family; walking on the beach and searching for shells and sharks’ teeth; and she was a master puzzle putterer togetherer.
Lola will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions there will be a family graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Orrum Baptist Church in her memory.
Memorials may be made to Orrum Baptist Church In care of:Pastor Gary Henderson 35 Quincey Drive Lumberton, NC 28358.

May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief in the next days, weeks, months...
Ms Lola had so much spunk and energy, a distinct kackle when something was funny, a kind word about anyone she knew, and a cordially welcoming smile for every child (from infant to adult). It was an honor to know Ms Lola Nye. Her presence was missed in Robeson Co when she moved away, but I know she's having a heckofa happy time now, facing the King of Kings and Lord of Lords... and joining Mr Rufus hand in hand once again.
May God continue to bless and keep each family member and friend in His care.

Dearest Jasper, Ruth Ann, and Beth
Sorry to learn of Lola's passing. God gave her a wonderful husband and precious children, and I am honored to have lived and grown up with you guys in Orrum. My Mother (Hazel Warwick Walters Smith) and I, along with Louise Britt, kept up with Lola and even called her a couple of times after she moved to Charlotte. The last time I saw her was a Sunday years ago when Mother and I were visiting Orrum church, and coincidently Lola was visiting that day. She was a dear, and I remember our "good ole days" in Orrum. Your Mom always had a smile on her face, showing her dimples. She was a strong lady. May God provide comfort and wrap his arms around you. Take one day at a time.
Much love and peace to you and Family,
Margo
