Lonnie Servais Obituary

January 30, 1950 – April 29, 2024

Today, Lonnie went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ after a long, courageous battle with cancer.  The Lord gave Lonnie 74 years on the earth beginning on January 30, 1950 in Tampa Florida when he was given to two loving parents, Kenneth and Verna Servais.

Lonnie is preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth G. and Verna Mae Servais, his maternal grandparents, George and Eva Joniaux, and his paternal grandparents, Clifford and Lilly Servais.

Lonnie is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Vickie, his two beautiful daughters Loni-Marie Smith and Ashlie Nicole Vaughan (Christopher).  Vickie has been his soulmate for 48 years.  The most fun they had was spending days together at Busch Gardens and Water Country for many years. He is also survived by his two sisters, Denise Turner of Evans, Georgia and Jae-Nee Ausley of Leonardtown, MD; two brothers, Guy G. Servais of Elizabeth City, NC and Christopher Servais of Clifton, Mississippi; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

Since Lonnie’s father was in the US Air Force, Lonnie got to travel to many locations including all of Europe.  His family settled in Hampton VA in 1962.  Upon graduating from ODU in 1972, Lonnie taught Math for the Hampton City School system for 34 years.  He loved his students and teaching.  He especially loved working with teenagers.

After retiring from teaching, Lonnie became a Care Driver for the American Cancer Society driving patients to treatments over 700 times.  His patients became like family to him.  Lonnie also loved to tutor kids in math for free because he knew how expensive tutors could be.

Lonnie became a member of the Exchange Club of Wythe in 2006, serving as a board member and numerous terms as the Secretary.

The gift God gave Lonnie was music and Lonnie, like his mother, taught himself to play the organ.  Following in her footsteps, Lonnie played the organ in church for 16+ years.

Lonnie loved hanging out with his friends, especially on the golf course.  He loved to watch baseball and football.  His favorite teams were the Atlanta Braves and The Green Bay Packers. He had to be a cheese head because both of his parents were from Green Bay!  His children gave him a share in the Packers for Christmas one year, so he was a proud owner of the Green Bay Packers.

Lonnie’s greatest Love in Life was his Savior, Jesus Christ.  Jesus was the center of his life and he always loved to talk to others about his Savior.

The family will receive friends from 5-7pm Friday, May 24, 2024 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. You are asked to wear your favorite team jersey. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Saturday, May 25, 2024 in the funeral home chapel and may be watched live by clicking HERE.

In lieu of flowers, any donations should go to the Peninsula Food Bank or the Animal Aid Society.

We are so sorry that Lonnie is no longer on earth our heart goes out to Vicky and his girls as well as all his family. I was so excited to see his posts on the ICC virtual Mass during COVID. It had been years since we sang together at ICC and when they sang at our wedding and Lonnie and Vicky encouraged us to become parents through adoption. We were on Facebook and had recently bought a condo in Hampton and hoped to invite Lonnie and Vicky over when the pandemic was finished. Unfortunately illness happened and this reunion didn't. In fact, in the last few months we lost five friends three of which sang at our wedding . Vicky please feel free to reach out when you need a friend. We hope to meet you again sometime that we are in the Tidewater area. Love, Mary and Joe

Lonnie,
Thank you for the impact you chose to make, the legacy that you are passing on. Your example of His love.
Personally, thank you Lonnie for the kindness you showed my mother, myself and my children. My daughter. The words of encouragement you offered.
Your family and friends shared such love.
Your love story written by your bride was touching in heart and soul.
Your love for each other is/was a beautiful, fragrant bouquet that kept blooming.
Many lives rooted by all those blooms you all shared.
I thank you.
In His Grip,
Brenda and family

Lonnie was one of a kind. I remember in SJV he was our classes' baseball pitcher. For whatever reason, I was catching that day instead of Tom Puglisi. Lonnie had a wicked knuckle ball. (Actually, ALL of Lonnie's pitches were wicked!) You had to get down in the dirt to stop his knuckle ball. Had a runner trying to steal second and I threw down. Almost took Lonnie's head off doing so. He hit the ground, the ball just missing him, and laying flat on the ground gave me "the look." Never forgot that look. But just like Lonnie, all was good by the next pitch. That was Lonnie. A great guy. Miss you Lonnie!

Going back so many years, I smile as I remember both he & his mother as musicians both at Bethel Manor Chapel and ICC. And Vicki your family also. The girls as infants. Your loss is so great.

Mr. Servais was my 8th grade Algebra teacher at Lindsay Jr. High School back in the mid 1970's. He was one of the coolest teachers I ever had. Whenever the math problem did not go quite right he just laughed and threw the eraser and chalk at the chalkboard! His classroom was directly across the hall from my father's (Bobby Bagley) history class. My condolences to the family. He had a great impact on so many people & students!

We taught together so many years, Lonnie was an important part of my professional life! His dedication to his family, his respect for his students, and his love for our Lord were in-fact those qualities I tried to emulate.
