"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” - II Timothy 4:7-8
Lucious Gamble, Jr., born January 23, 1941 in Berkeley County, South Carolina to the late Daisy McBride and Tassie Croker, Sr.; adopted and reared by the late Mother Alice and Elder Lucious Gamble, Sr. He departed this life on Sunday, August 20, 2023 at the Lowcountry Community Hospice House, Summerville, South Carolina.
Lucious, affectionately called “Junior Gamble” by his family and close friends, was educated in the public schools of Berkeley County, South Carolina and was a 1960 graduate of Russellville High School. After graduation, he acquired a job at Highland Crate in St. Stephen, SC., then married his high school sweetheart, Loretta Black, on December 22nd of that same year. This 62-year union was blessed with two beautiful daughters that he adored and that adored him. They were definitely the epitome of “Daddy’s Girls”.
Lucious and his wife, Loretta relocated to New York City in 1962. He obtained employment at Royal Printing Company in New York from 1962 to 1978, when he and his family moved back to South Carolina. He secured various jobs after returning home: Adcor, Hanahan, SC, Head Custodian at St. Stephen High School and Head Custodian at Timberland High School, retiring July 1, 2010 from Berkeley County School District.
Lucious accepted Christ at an early age and attended Alice Temple Church of Deliverance, what is presently Refuge Temple St. Stephen. He was most recently a member of Christ Fellowship Church under the leadership of Pastor Jeremiah Ravenell, where he attended faithfully until his health started to fail.
He enjoyed gardening, lawn care, doing things on the computer and working with small electronic devices. He also enjoyed watching westerns and action movies.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elder Lucious Gamble, Sr. and Mother Alice B. Gamble, Daisy McBride, Tassie Croker, Sr. and stepmother Sarah Croker; twelve siblings, Angeline Sellers, Margaret Bradshaw, Louise Ravenell, Sarah E. Gamble, Robert Lee McBride, Lillian Drayton, Tassie Croker Jr., Inez Middleton, John Lee Croker, Gwendolyn White, Ruth Thomas, and Mary Oliver.
Those left to cherish his memory are: his wife of 62 years, Loretta Black Gamble; children, Louetta G. (Anthony “Tony”) Addison, Saint Stephen, South Carolina; Dedra Gamble, Moncks Corner, South Carolina; siblings, Ernestine McBride, Chester, Pennsylvania; Lela Williams, Chester, Pennsylvania; Larry (Mae Frances) Moultrie, Saint Stephen, South Carolina; in-laws, Zinna B. (Samuel) Ravenell, Sheila B. (Alton) Winns, Rinnes A. Black, Velma B.
