Mr. Luther James Peterson, Sr. was born on October 2, 1927, the son of the late Samuel Peterson and Mattie Mae Wier in Noxubee County, Macon, Mississippi.
He attended Shuqualak Public Schools.
Luther was in the Korean War and served as a Hospital Orderly Cook 1952 - 1954, with an Honorable Discharge. He moved to Kansas City in 1963 and was employed as a laborer for Morton Kahn Construction from 1963 until he retired in 1980’s. Luther was a Master Plumber by trade and was self-employed working for multiple people where he was affectionately known as Pete, L. J., and Slim until he retired in 2017.
Luther was united in holy matrimony to Lela Robinson on December 18, 1956, and they shared a beautiful union of over 40 years before her passing. Together, they were blessed with 8 children. Luther was blessed with a daughter from a previous relationship.
Luther was an avid fisherman and loved fishing daily after retirement. For the last 20 years, his children would celebrate his birthday with a weekend of fun to include a fish fry and dinner/dance. Luther would catch all the fish in preparation for the Friday night fish fry hosted at his home. Family would travel to Kansas City to help celebrate each year. Everyone was welcome including the entire neighborhood, family and friends.
Luther was preceded in death by his wife, Lela R. Peterson; brothers, Melvin John Peterson, Booker T. Peterson, and Will Dancy; sisters, Annie B. Peterson and Mary Davis Roberts.
Luther peacefully departed this life on Friday, August 8, 2025, at Baptist Homes of Independence.
