Margaret, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, passed away on January 4, 2026, at the age of 83 in her home. She was known and loved by her family, neighbors and friends for her warmth, generosity, and welcoming spirit.
Calling hours are Friday, January 9th from 4 PM - 6 PM, with a service immediately following, at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville.
Margaret is survived by her husband of 61 years, John; oldest son, John Jr., Watertown, son and daughter-in-law Tom and Liz Scofield, Angola, IN; her daughter and son-in-law Allison and Gary Newton, Adams; grandchildren Jessica and Dillon Henschen, Fort Wayne, IN, Jodi Scofield, Angola, IN, and Avery Newton, Adams; two great-grandchildren: Otto and Oliver Henschen, Fort Wayne, IN; one brother Matt (Karen), Theresa; three sisters Catherine (Glenn) Remington, Ellisburg, Dorothy Hobbs, Watertown, and Julie (Dale) Forrester, Michigan; a sisters-in-laws, Joyce Creighton, Lorraine; Patricia Creighton, Mannsville; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, four brothers Floyd, Mike, James, Andy, and a brother-in-law Leslie Hobbs.
Margaret was born August 18th, 1942, in Lisbon, NY, a daughter to Floyd and Dorothy Murdie Creighton. She graduated from Lisbon Central, Lisbon, NY in 1963, and from Harper Method Beautician School, Rochester, NY in 1963. Margaret married John A. Scofield May 2nd, 1964, at St. Cecilia's Church, Adams. Margaret operated her own beauty shop in Mannsville, NY for two years, then moved the shop to her home in Adams, where she continued to serve her regular clients until 1986, with many becoming longtime friends. From 1986 to 2014 she then worked at the South Jefferson Central School Clarke Building as an In School Suspension monitor, where she engaged with many students, often leaving a lasting impression. She subbed at South Jeff for another 5 years, forming lasting friendships with many of the ladies at school.
Margaret worked the family farm with her husband, John, for many years, raising sheep, goats, calves, and milking the herd. Being a dairy farm, there were always many cats needing love and attention. Margaret was known as the “cat whisperer”, attending to, and rescuing many.
Margaret was also active as a 4-H leader in the community when her kids were young. She enjoyed many years of showing animals at the local County Fairs, and New York State Fair with her family.
Besides the family farm, Margaret helped in all aspects of the other family business, John’s Auction Service, for over 25 years. Household, and barn sales, held on the weekends, were a staple for many locals.
In her free time, she loved tending to her flowers and gardens and enjoying the many birds that visited her feeders. She certainly had a green thumb! Indoors, she enjoyed watching cooking, and gardening shows, as well as reading, and baking. Every holiday dinner featured one or more of Margaret’s pies, and if we were lucky, got some of her infamous homemade, no-recipe to be found stuffing.
Margaret loved a good conversation, whether it be with friends or family, but conversations with her grandchildren, and great grandchildren were extra special. She always saw the best in people, and was always willing to lend a hand, without question or complaint. She embraced her family. She was embraced right back. We love you and miss you.

Mrs. Scofield was always such a kind woman. I met her more times than I care to admit in school during ISS, she was always there to talk and offer advice and guidance. She will be truly missed by all that knew her.

I fondly remember Mrs. Scofield. She let off a special light in the hallways of South Jeff HS. I remember many conversations with her when I helped her while I was a student in high school. I'm sure when she worked as the ISS monitor she mentored many teens, even if they didn't realize it at the time. I'm very sorry, Allison, and all of the family, for your loss.

I remember the family from when I was a young child. Margaret was my 4-H leader and she took the time and patience to teach me how to sew. I still have the little pillow that I hand cut, stitched on her sewing machine and hand quilted. I rode the bus with the kids and remember seeing John at the auction barn behind Spring St in town. All memories of a wonderful family and teacher. My deepest heartfelt condolences and prayers for God's love to the Scofield family.

A beautiful woman both inside and out! She had a special calming effect on you when she would stop and visit. Margaret provided “that special mother’s touch” to many students who needed some guidance. She was a woman with a very strong work ethic topped off with lots of love to share. The world needs more Margarets! I am grateful for having known her! Nancy
