Marion “Mick” Joseph Martek passed away peacefully in his sleep Friday, September 27, 2019 at the age of 81 years. Marion was born in Bay City, Michigan on January 21, 1938 to the late Charles and Mary (Koczanasz) Martek. Marion was a four-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force and worked at both GM’s Saginaw Metal Casting Operations (Grey Iron) and the former Saginaw Nodular Iron Plant for over 45 years. He retired in 2006. He was a proud member of the UAW, Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Polish Legion of American Veterans, Polish Falcons of America and the American Veterans.
Mick lived his entire life in Bay City except for his years in the Air Force. He enjoyed a zest for life and was always up for a good cigar to relax and share stories of his days in the service and working in the foundry. He loved watching his Lions and Tigers play and was always up for a good movie. He was admired for his quiet strength and his straight forward way of cutting through to the heart of a problem. Wherever he went he always ran into someone he knew; so much so that it became a family joke that he must have had a secret life.
Marion is survived by his four children, Kris (Renee) of Canton, Kelli (Louie) Roth of Bay City, Kyle (Jodie) Martek of Midland and Kari (Keith) Aikens of Kawkawlin, and many grandchildren, nephews, nieces and great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife Sally of 41 years who passed away in 2006.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, October 3, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Czestchowa Parish- St. Stanislaus Church. The Celebrant will be Rev. Fr. Richard M. Filary with the rite of committal and military honors by the Bay County Veteran’s at Calvary Cemetery. The Knights of Columbus #414 bible presentation service will take place at 6:45 p.m. with the Vigil for the Deceased will take place at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at the funeral home. Marion will be taken to the church on Thursday, October 3, 2019 to lie in state from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. I was deeply saddened to learn of Micks passing. I met Kris when we moved around the corner from them in the mid 70s. We have been friends ever since... and fortunately for me, the entire Martek family as well! I have such wonderful memories of growing up in the neighborhood. Mick and Sally were an everyday part of my life. They always tolerated my constant hanging around...and even seemed to enjoy my company too. Kari was just a few grades ahead of us and had to be annoyed by our little kids antics.. but never acted like it! Kelli and Kyle were also getting a little older and were around us so much in those times. Nothing but great memories.
When I got older and moved an hour away, I met my future wife Julie. When I introduced her to Kris and his family..they loved her from the get go and she felt the same. We would drop by when we were back in Bay City and Mick and Sally were always so welcoming and genuinely happy to see us. They were one of those families that anyone would enjoy spending time with. Julie always started asking in January if we could go to the Marteks for 4th of July. Mick always had the grill and picnic table full of great food, and always told me where to go for the best meats or coney sauce! A book of knowledge for those kind of tips.
One of Micks many great qualities was that when he would ask you about your life and how things were going..he wasnt just making conversation... he truly wanted to know. Julie and I would take turns telling things about work and Mick always had questions and advice. A great and unique quality indeed.
For the past 15 years or so, Julie and I have spent most every 4th of Julie with the Marteks. We are both so blessed to have spent this past 4th there. Mick was a bit weak but still joined us outside for quite a long time. Still inquiring how things were going for us, still giving good advice. We got some sweet pictures of Mick playing a light game of tug of war with our Labrador.
To end this novel I will say that Mick will be so missed. Our thoughts are with all the Martek children and Grandchildren. Celebrate the life of a wonderful man and have peace knowing how much he loved you all.. and how he appreciated the love you gave in return.
