Judi and I are very sorry to hear this morning of Mark's death. I hired Mark from Witte Drug to work at the Hawk Eye so he could better use his photography skills and he did an excellent job. He was hard working and thorough. We visited him many years ago on a trip from Portland to Burlington and, in turn, he came to visit us a couple of times in later years. We corresponded occasionally by email and telephone and I'll miss his chats and cheerful demeanor.

Mark was a true blue colleague and friend, first at Witte Drug and then The Hawk Eye. He was always there to listen, to do his best and to help. I loved his laugh. Rest in peace, Mark. Thanks for being my friend.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of my friend Mark. Mark and I had been friends growing up in Burlington, IA since we were in middle school. We attended high school and Hawkeye Institute of Technology together as well. We had always kept in touch through the years (especially at Christmas time) even though we each had gone different ways in our careers and lived in different states. He visited my wife and I in Denver a few years ago. It was always good to hear from him and hear of what he had been up to over the past year. The past several years I had seen him occasionally when my wife and I were heading back to Burlington to visit family. We would sometimes stop and have breakfast in North Platte with him if his schedule on the railroad allowed. In recent years, I also had the chance to get together with him at the North Platte Country Bluegrass Festival. The past two years he came and listened to the bluegrass band I was playing with (One More River) and then we would go out for lunch or dinner and catch up on things. I was looking forward to seeing him again this April. Now I shall have to wait until heaven. Anyway, Mark was a great guy and a good friend. I will miss you buddy! My condolences to his parents and family. May God bless and comfort you during this time of loss.

Mark was with The Hawk Eye when I arrived in 1985. A few years later, he took my favorite picture ever at The Hawk Eye's election night party: of my wife and daughter. It's been in our living room since and I always think of Mark when I pass it.
Mark covered the grain elevator explosion in Burlington, the Flight 232 crash in Sioux City and countless other assignments until railroading took him away from the news business.
His death is a surprise. Allison and I offer our condolences to the Fageol family.

Mark was at The Hawk Eye when I started here 30 years ago and helped show me the ropes. We worked together for many years until he was hired in Sioux City, which was a natural progression. His love of trains seems to have called him away from newspapers, but not photography. He was always a hard worker and fun to work with. I was shocked to hear of his passing. My condolences to his family. God Bless.

I worked with Mark Fageol during his time as chief photographer at The Sioux City (Iowa) Journal. He was a talented asset to our newsroom and became a good friend.
