Mary Kathryn Clarinda Hindel Smith, 98, of Frazeysburg, Ohio died peacefully Monday, November 8, 2021 at the home of her son, Richard, in New Lexington, Ohio.
Born May 10, 1923 in Dresden, Ohio she was a daughter of the late Dorsey and Mary Elizabeth (Luckett) Hindel. Mrs. Smith worked for 5 years at the Mosaic Tile Company of Zanesville and she retired in 1983 from the Essex Wire Company of Zanesville with 16 years of service. She was a Methodist by faith. Mary was affectionately known by the townspeople as “Grannie”. She loved sitting on her porch swing and visiting with those who passed by. She also enjoyed playing cards and sports with her children and grandchildren.
Surviving are two daughters, Rose (Lee) Hynus Sr., of Somerset, and Loretta Robinson of Frazeysburg; four sons, Joseph (Rita) Smith Sr. of Adamsville, Steven (Dixie) Smith of Zanesville, Gary Smith of Frazeysburg and Richard (Jennifer) Smith of New Lexington; thirty-two grandchildren; ninety-two great grandchildren and forty-four great great grandchildren. Also surviving are two daughter in-laws, Martha Smith of Zanesville and Jerrie Smith of Frazeysburg; several nieces and nephews and her faithful dog, “Rosebud”.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harley E. Smith Sr., whom she married December 14, 1940 and who died November 16, 1982; two daughters, Mary Ann Burr and Donna Jean Smith; three sons, Harley E. Smith Jr., Dorsey Smith Sr., and Donald Smith; a granddaughter Melissa Robinson; a great granddaughter MacKenzie Ferland; a son in-law, George Burr Jr.; two sisters, Anna Slaughter and Loretta Groves and eight brothers, Bus, Jack, John, Don, Lee, Dorsey, Lloyd and Jim Hindel.
Calling hours will be 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm Thursday, November 11, 2021 at the Frazeysburg Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home, 110 West Third Street.
Funeral services will be 11:00am Friday, November 12, 2021 at the funeral home with Mr. Frosty Pierce officiating. Burial will be in Frazeysburg Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Ohio.
