Life and Legacy
Mary Applis Johnson Wynn was born October 14. 1934 to the union of Grey Johnson and Ivory Smith of Houston, Texas. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at St. Paul CME Church in Independence Heights. She later joined Blueridge Methodist Church in Sunnyside.
Mary’s educational journey began in Houston Public Schools at Burrus Elementary and later graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 4th Ward. She later attended Prairie View A & M University, in Prairie View, Texas. Her extraordinary retail career with speciality stores Sakowitz and Walter Pyes was marked by a strong work ethic and dedication to excellence.
In 1955 Mary married Elbert Wynn, and together they produced two beautiful daughters, AlgeRita and Alancia Wynn. Their 53 years of marriage were filled with love, companionship and mutual respect. Mary was a woman of many passions. She enjoyed bowling, RV Motorclub traveling, cooking, assembling large puzzles on the dining room table, playing cards ( Bid Whist was her favorite), along with dancing with her husband. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and a Founding Member of the Texas Rollers Recreational Vehicle Club of Houston.
She is preceded in death by her husband Elbert Wynn, her parents Grey Johnson,
Ivory Smith Johnson, and siblings; Grey Johnson Jr. (Biggie), Herbert Johnson, Stella Johnson Monmouth, Gladys Johnson Parker, Earl Johnson, Patricia Ann Johnson (Pat), Maggie Johnson Feggett, Rayfield Johnson, Harold Johnson and nephew Dr. Reuben Monmouth Jr.
Mary is survived by her two daughters AlgeRita Wynn of Los Angeles, California and
Dr. Alancia Wynn of Alexandria, Virginia. Her sister Henrietta Johnson Dickerson of Houston, Texas, Nephews; Dr.Michael ( Dawn ) and Dennis (Carolyn) Monmouth, along with a host of nephews, nieces, great nieces / nephews, and great great nieces / nephews and friends who will forever cherish her memory.
