Michael Churton Obituary

MICHAEL B. CHURTON, 60, died peacefully and way-too-soon at home, with his family at his side, on June 3, 2017 after a short but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born in San Francisco on July 3, 1956, Mike was the eldest son of the late R. Barry and Catherine Churton.  Forever proud of his “DC” and Nor Cal roots, Mike attended Our Lady of Mercy grammar school in Daly City, graduated from St. Ignatius College Preparatory in 1974 and earned a degree in Radio and Television with a minor in history from San Francisco State University in 1980.

Mike worked in the telecommunications industry for over thirty years, including field and sales positions with Pacific Bell, AT&T and most recently Verizon.  Mike leaves behind many close colleagues, clients and friends throughout the industry.  Mike also was an active member of the Colombo Club in Oakland for many years.

A long-time Petaluma resident, Mike was the devoted and loving husband to his wife of almost thirty years, Karen (Tiernan), and proud father to his beloved son Jeff and his very dear daughter Jen.  Mere words cannot describe the closeness and friendship Mike built with Jeff and Jen, a relationship that will last a lifetime and beyond.

Mike will be an irreplaceable member of his close band of Churton-Koenig siblings.  Originally one of four brothers and a sister, after Catherine’s death Barry married the late Patricia Finn Churton, the widowed mother of three sons.  Together they formed and nurtured a festive, vibrant, loving family of eight children that welcomed in scores of friends from the City and Marin over the years.  Mike will be forever missed by his sister, Deborah Churton, and his brothers Mark Koenig (Theresa), David Churton (Signe), James Koenig (Becky), Peter Koenig (Mary Guilfoyle), Kenneth Churton (Lucy) and John (Jak) Churton (Lisa).

Mike also is survived by his dear mother-in-law, Peggy Tiernan, and very close brothers-in-law Kevin Tiernan, Timothy Tiernan and Dennis Tiernan, as well as 26 loving and well-loved nieces and nephews and a grand-niece and grand-nephew.

Above all, Mike was committed to his family, joining in his children’s many activities and taking annual family pilgrimages to his beloved Lake Tahoe and Spring Training in Arizona. His home was always open. There you could hear classic 80’s tunes (and the never-to-be-missed Frank Sinatra magic as background for Sunday night family dinners), find an incredible meal, a well-poured drink and countless belly laughs.  A lifetime fan and commentator for the Giants, Niners and Warriors, he relished his three World Series triumphs.  Self-proclaimed “smartest Churton”, Mike’s intelligence, dry humor and sharp wit will be remembered by all who knew him.  He truly was larger than life.

Family and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass celebrating Mike’s life on Friday, June 16, 2017 at 11:00 at St. James Catholic Church, 125 Sonoma Mountain Parkway, Petaluma.  In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Colombo Club, 5321 Claremont Avenue, Oakland, CA  94618 would be appreciated.

I worked with Michael at Pacific Bell/SBC for several years. He was quite a character. Something made me think of him today so I did a google search and found this obituary. Sorry that he's gone from our lives. -Vince Petrie

Karen, I am so sorry for your loss. Mike was the best roommate ever and he would be the first to say so! I still remember Mike sending me into the dispatch center that Saturday to check you out before he asked you out...I don't know if you ever knew that was why I dropped in that day. I do miss watching you two when you started to date and laughing with you both. You both will always be in my heart.

Take care,

Rick Kerrigan

Dear Churton family: I am so very sorry for your loss. I learned so much about Mike through Jen (my daughter Erin's close friend) and came to know what an amazing and great man he was through those stories. He and your family have been in my thoughts and prayers, and will continue to be. Sincerely, Jenny Ryan

Karen and Family,
I can't begin to say how sorry I am at the loss of Mike. I know its been years since we have all been together but you were always on our minds. We had so many fun memories and many laughs. Having 5 kids put a detour on many of our friendships and I am so sorry for that. We always thought that one day when we were watching Jeopardy we would see Mike on there as no one wanted to play against him at Trivial Pursuit. Our love and prayers are always with you and please feel free to contact Dennis or myself. Hugs to you all

Yes, way too soon. What I remember about Mike and his family are all the great holiday get togethers. What an amazing family. Mike, a.k.a the chef, was an amazing cook, great husband, loving father, and provider. We both shared a passion for cooking. I learned some great tips from Mike. He will definitely be missed and leaves a big hole in everyone's heart. I know you're in heaven Mike, cooking up some great meals for all the angels (smile). My heart felt sympathy and best wishes go out to Karen, Jeff and Jen. Best, Betty

Dear Churton Family,
I am saddened to hear about Mike's passing. It is less than a year ago when I had the pleasure of reconnecting with him at our OLM reunion at Sharp Park Clubhouse. We spent 8 years bonding in the "B" class. I smiled when I read that he had proclaimed himself "smartest Churton" because I clearly remember him being an avid reader with an excellent vocabulary. I enjoyed revisiting some OLM/Westlake highlights with him at the reunion. Mike was one of the good guys. Please accept my condolences.

To the entire Churton clan: Our condolences seem so trite regarding a man I have known, and been friends with, for 55 years. From our days at Olympia School sharing a Kindergarten class, to 8 years in the same class at OLM, and for so many laughs, good times and memories after high school and beyond, I will miss his friendship and unspoken understanding between us. Even in the attached picture from 1964, we are shoulder to shoulder. RIP, friend, and God bless you and your family.

We are missing Mike along with you. I was listening to Frank Sinatra the other night and thinking of Mike. We are both "foodies" and I'm going to miss talking about recipes with him and enjoying a meal. Remembering the years we would try to keep up with the kids on Halloween. This just breaks me up. We are so sorry for your loss. Kurt and I are glad to have fond memories.

Our sincere condolences,
Kurt, Lori, Amanda and Kevin Olson

Dear Churton and Koenig families,
I offer my deepest sympathies and have been praying for Mike and his family. I will add Mike's name to the Prayers of the Faithful at Mass this Sunday. I have known the Churton family for 50 years and was always embraced like a brother. A warm and loving family with no shortage of humor and joy. Mike was always considerate, thoughtful and kind, even when he caught me sneaking up into his room above the family room on San Felipe. I too am sad, but we are comforted by our faith in knowing that he is at peace, happy, and still watching from his new room above. God Bless.
