Minnie Margaret Sivels, was born to the late Theophlious D. McCoy and Beulah McCoy on March 17, 1931, in Giddings, Texas. On Monday, January 30, 2023, God in his infinite wisdom and love quietly called her home to eternal rest.
Minnie attended Sweet Home Baptist Church and School in Giddings, Texas. She began nursing training at Lee Memorial Hospital in Giddings, Texas and completed nursing school in San Antonio, Texas. On September 11, 1951, she married Edward James Sivels Jr. in San Antonio, TX and relocated to Chesapeake, VA. She was employee by The Krisp-Pak Co. Inc. and then served as a dedicated Housekeeper/Caretaker for The Battaglia/Page/Sykes families for many years. She later worked as a Prayer Counselor at The Christian Broadcasting Network for nearly a decade.
Minnie’s faith in God led her to unite with First Baptist Church South Hill, Chesapeake, VA. As time went on, she joined The Garden of Prayer Church of God in Christ led by Bishop Levi E. Willis Sr. Years later she became a member of Gethsemane C.O.G.I.C., which merged with St. Stephens C.O.G.I.C., in 1986 which is now known as Cathedral of Faith Church of God in Christ. She served faithfully on the Mothers Board and Women’s Ministry until her health declined. Mother Sivels was a true servant, a woman of virtue, wisdom, integrity, and love.
In addition to her parents, preceding her in death is her husband Edward James Sivels Jr. of 63 years, brother Theophlious D. McCoy Jr, sister Dorothy N. McCoy, sisters-in-law: Vivian McCoy, Vertices McCoy, Dorothy Clemons, Catherine Cuffee, Vivian Spence, Sarah Grandy, Elaine Lamb and brothers-in-law James Sivels, Levi Silvils, James Lamb, Willie Lamb, James B.T. Cuffee and Charles Grandy.
Mother Sivels is dearly loved by her family to include her four sons: Bishop Stanley Sivels (Marie) of Enfield, NC, Charles Sivels (Ansha) of Fayetteville, GA, Larry Sivels of Tallahassee, FL, Marshall Sivels (Ella) of Portsmouth, VA; three daughters: Sherry Sivels of Chesapeake, VA, Vivian Deborah Banks (Isaiah) of Madison, AL, Viola Sivels of Chesapeake, VA; brothers: Charlie D. McCoy, Robert Lee McCoy of Giddings, TX; sisters-in-law: Bessie Tanner, Norma Lamb, Bertha Lamb and Emma Sivels all of Chesapeake, VA, brothers-in-law: William Lamb (Judy) of Charlotte NC, and Clarence Lamb (Argie) of Chesapeake, VA; Edwood & Helen Shields of Giddings, TX. 20 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home Thursday, February 9, 2023, from 5:00-7:00p.m. Celebration of Life Service is Friday, February 10, 2023 at 12:00 noon at Cathedral of Faith C.O.G.I.C., 2020 Portlock Road, Chesapeake, VA.
