Missak Kharmanjian Galian, 66, of Morton Grove, passed away Monday, October 4, 2021, after battling heart disease. He was the loving husband of 33 years to wife Nora Galian (née Kassabian). He is survived by his daughter Shaghig Danielle Galian.
The youngest son of Armenian Genocide survivors Garabed and Mary (née Baghdoian) Kharmanjian, Missak was brother to Yester and Margret and is predeceased by brothers Hovsep and Sarkis.
Born on January 1, 1955, in Aleppo, Syria, Missak moved to Beirut, Lebanon, at the age of three and immigrated to the United States at the age of 19. He immediately began work at John Crane Company where he remained a dedicated employee for over 40 years.
A devout Armenian Orthodox Christian and defender of Armenian values, Missak Galian maintained a very active role within the Chicago Armenian community by publishing the only Armenian monthly newspaper, Parev Monthly, in the Chicagoland area. Missak was a frequent supporter, organizer, and advocate of Armenian cultural events and was known for his charisma and ability to bring the community together through thoughtful leadership.
His funeral will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2021, at 11 a.m. at St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church, 6700 W Diversey Ave, Chicago, IL 60707. He will be laid to rest at Ridgewood Cemetery in Des Plaines, Illinois.
Memorial donations in Missak’s name may be made to St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church.
