Ms. Bernice Huger was born to the late David Ezekiel Brittion and the late Mozelle Watkins on January 26, 1939 at Grady Hospital. She departed this life on Thursday, April 3, 2025.
She was raised by her single father, a retired painter. He instilled in her the importance of loving God and family. She took care of him until his death. She remained in Atlanta and moved in with her brother to help raise several of her nieces and nephews. In her early 20s, Bernice moved to New York where she worked for the Treasury Dept. Bureau of Customs. She met her husband, the late Leroy Huger and they married and raised three children. While raising her family, she was a caregiver to a host of neighborhood children, nurturing and loving them. She relocated back to her roots in 1994 after the death of her husband.
Bernice joined the Methodist Church where she was an active member often found in the kitchen. She believed in loving, helping and treating others with kindness and respect; and often said “I’m not perfect, but if there was any way I could help someone I would.”
Bernice, known for her infectious smile and curly hair, will always be remembered as passionate, loving, sincere and sassy.
She leaves to cherish fond memories: one son, David “Anthony” of New York, two daughters, Angela and Tracey, and one grand-daughter Aiyana, all of Atlanta. In addition, her brother, George (Lucille) Cannon of Atlanta, her sister, Emma Wright of New York, three sisters-in-law, Lillie, Ellen and Patricia Whitten, all of Cross, SC, one brother-in-law, John (Gloria) Whitten of Pineville, SC, the entire Prioleau family in-love, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and great-grand dog, Andy.
To know her was to love her.
