Ms. Wonda Henderson Obituary

Memorial Service will be held 1:30 PM EDT Thursday, April 2, 2026 in the chapel of Battle and Battle Funeral Home.


Ms. Wonda L. Henderson was born on September 20, 1948, in Putnam County, Palatka, Florida, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Roosevelt Henderson. She peacefully transitioned on March 25, 2026, in Columbus, Georgia.


Wonda was raised in a loving home alongside her younger sister, Mrs. Henri Faye Henderson Davidson, who preceded her in death. She received her early education through the Putnam County School System, where she developed a love for reading, participated in the school band, and nurtured a natural curiosity about the world around her. She graduated from Central Academy High School in 1965. Wonda was very involved in her church affiliation as a young active member at Emmanuel United Methodist Church were she loved playing the piano. 


She continued her academic journey at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, earning her bachelor’s degree in 1969. Dedicated to lifelong learning, she went on to earn two master’s degrees from Spelman College and Valdosta State University.


Wonda had a deep passion for education and devoted her life to teaching. She began her career as an English educator in the St. Johns County School District in St. Augustine Florida. She later continued her professional career within the University System of Georgia, serving at Perimeter College in the Atlanta area for over 30 years before retiring.


Outside of her professional life, Wonda was known for her vibrant spirit. She had a love for music, enjoyed dancing, and maintained a lifelong appreciation for learning and exploring the world through many different perspectives.


Following her retirement, Wonda relocated from Atlanta, Georgia, to Phenix City, Alabama, where she resided with her beloved sister, Mrs. Henri Faye Henderson Davidson.


She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted niece and caregiver, Mrs. Lauren A. Davidson Chambers (Steven I. Chambers); one great niece, Miss Ellie Elizabeth-Grace Chambers; and loving cousins, Gayle Ligon (Bruce), Cassaundra Ross (Joe), and Wendell Threadgill (Beverly). She also leaves a host of special extended family members and dear friends, including the Williams Family and Robinson Family of Palatka, Florida, as well as numerous classmates and friends from Central Academy High School and Spelman College.Special support champions; the Bryan Family, the Brownlow Family, the Long Family, the Samuels Family,  the Chambers Family, the Richardson Family, the Harris Family, & the Holt Family.


Wonda’s life was further enriched by the compassionate care she received from her extended family at Alzheimer Associations- Columbus, Geogia Chapter, St. Luke Respite Care, PeacefulRivers, Columbus Hospice, The Gardens Memory Care, Diamond Nails, Klose Kutz Barber, & Cooley Massage Services.


As she was deeply loved, she will be profoundly missed by all who knew her.
