PATRICK JOSEPH “P.J.” CONWAY
“Loving husband, father and grandfather”
Patrick Joseph (P.J.) Conway passed away peacefully Monday, May 4, 2020, at Beacon Brook Health Center. He was the loving husband of Lucille (Campoli) Conway with whom he celebrated his 55th wedding anniversary on May 1st of this year.
P.J. was born June 1, 1942, in Waterbury, a son of the late John and Margaret (Galvin) Conway. Prior to his retirement in 1998, P.J. worked as a sportswriter and editor for the Republican American Newspaper where he worked since 1961. He loved covering Major League Baseball but focused specifically on local Waterbury sports. He also enjoyed his part-time work at W.A.R.C. where he worked for several years. He was the host of his own sports radio show on WWCO. P.J. especially enjoyed working on his brother Tom’s political campaigns over the years. He looked forward to his Thursday morning coffee with his friends at Dunkin and also enjoyed special times with his close friends “The Fatta Cousie”. P.J. was a regular guest on Way Back Waterbury feature on Talk of the Town with his devoted friend Larry Rifkin for well over a decade where he loved reminiscing about Waterbury’s personalities, neighborhoods and of course sports. P.J. was a devoted fan of Rutgers basketball and was sure not to miss a game. He enjoyed listening to “The Fan” Radio and watching the Boston Red Sox. He will be greatly missed by his devoted family and all who were blessed to know him.
Besides his loving wife “Lu” he is survived by his children; Kellie (Conway) and her husband Jeffrey Pelletier of Waterbury, P.J. Jr. and his wife Laura of Prospect, Lenny and his wife Andrea of Waterbury and Mark and his wife Betsy Conway of Watertown. His grandchildren filled a special place in his heart. He leaves Patrick III, and Adam Conway, Colleen and Timothy Pelletier and Landon Conway all of whom were devoted to him. He also leaves his daughter-in-law Lori Conway of Watertown.
He was lucky to have such a supportive family throughout his life and illness. He also leaves behind two sister-in-laws and a brother-in-law Tony and Leonora Spino and Irene Conway as well as several nieces and nephews and a host of friends and extended family.
P.J. was predeceased by his two brothers John Conway and Thomas Conway, Sr.. and three sisters; Margaret “Peggy” Shugrue, Helen Butler, and Maureen Iava.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Beacon Brook, 89 Weid Dr., Naugatuck, CT 06770 for personal protective equipment for the staff whom he loved. P.J.’s family will be forever grateful for the love and care he received while he was a resident. The family would also like to thank relatives and friends who reached out to P.J. and those that sent him special videos.
May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
Arrangements: Due to COVID-19 pandemic limitations, a private calling hour will be held Thursday May 7, 2020 followed by graveside service at 11:00 AM at All Saints Cemetery. Those wishing to attend the graveside service may stay in their cars. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at a date and time to be announced. Lucille and family,
So sorry for your loss. Few people live such a long life and never have anything negative said about them. PJ fit that mold. He was cheerful and optimistic whenever he crossed your path. As a co-worker for many years, I can attest that his work ethic and dedication were always at the highest possible level. And in life's most important grade, he was A+ as a family man. God welcome his soul.

What a decent man. So sorry to read of his death in the newspaper he graced for years as a reporter and co-worker.
He, like his brother John, was one of the many good souls at 389 Meadow who helped young reporters by friendship and example. Outside the paper, his brother Tom did the same for hometown journalists covering politics and the city.
Every story has an ending but PJ's is not over. It will continue for years to come in the memories of many.

I extend my sincerest Sympathy to the Conway family.
My fondest memory of Mr. PJ Conway dates back to the mid 70's when I played high school football.
Mr. Conway was covering the season opening game in '76 I believe it was between Sacred Heart High, where I played, and Holy Cross High, which had generally been dominating this rivalry since opening its doors.
The Hearts happened to turn the tables that season and we emerged victorious and off on the right foot towards an ultimate City Title at least. After the game concluded I recall exiting the shower area and headed towards the locker room to an eagerly waiting sports reporter from the Waterbury Republican-American newspaper who desired to interview me after this hard fought contest.
I recall being a little nervous and fumbling for the right words and Mr. Conway just had that knack for settling me down and helping me make some sense of what I was trying to say. He made me look good and I'll never forget it!
I know he was loved by his peers at the newspaper. I was an employee in the Advertising Dept. there towards the end of his career and witnessed this first hand. THANK YOU Mr. PJ Conway you will be dearly missed I'm sure.

Lucille and the Conway family I will always remember Pete fondly. When he would stop in to St. Mary School to see Lucille we would talk sports, mostly baseball. He was an amazingly knowledgeable and a real gentlemen. My thoughts and prayers are with you Lucille and your whole family at this awful time. Condolences and Best wishes Mr.Bill

Much Sympathy to the Conway Family.
I have known PJ since our early teenage years and he was ALWAYS just such a good guy. I truly appreciated all the support he provided to Youth Sports in Waterbury and the Greater Waterbury area.
Personally, I want to Thank him for the support he gave to me which helped to secure and bring the Mickey Mantle World Series Baseball Tournament to Waterbury in '84. The articles he wrote contained many positives to ensure this would happen and I remain grateful for that to this day.

P.J. was exactly the type of person you would want to be. When we moved to Waterbury, he welcomed me and my family as if we had been friends forever. He was a great colleague and the prototypical newspaper man of his time. I will always remember those post-deadline breaks on the Republican-American roof - even in the winter cold. May his memory be eternal

When I started at the paper as a summer intern back in 1981, PJ was already one of the "old pros" at the paper. He was a great help in getting me started in my career and I can't thank him and the others in the sports department enough. He always enjoyed a good laugh and, of course, possessed a wealth of information about Waterbury. We were all very lucky to have known him.

Marianne & I send you are deepest sympathy to you and you entire family. Marianne & I first meet PJ when our 2 sons played Pop Warner Football for the Waterbury Knights Pop Warner Organization. PJ wrote many articles about many of the Pop Warner Players. We remember the time he wrote about my Father in Law Jim (Marzano) Morris when Jim was working for the Yankee Ball Club in Fort Lauderdale. My Father in law was so proud to see his name and picture in the newspaper. A great man gone to soon. May he rest in internal peace.

My condolences to the Conway family. I was a reporter at The Republican-American from 1986 to 2000 and had the pleasure of working in the same newsroom as P.J. for many years. He was a Waterbury institution (as was his brother Tom) and one the the nicest people I've had the pleasure of meeting. I last saw him in 2016 at the Waterbury Irish Mayor for the Day festivities and he greeted me with his usual big smile. It was an honor to have known him.

From our home to yours, my family sends our deepest sympathy. The Republican-American came into our home for decades (and still does) and with it came P.J. Conway, in my favorite part of the paper, the Sports section. On the weekends depending on who got to the paper first, my Dad and I would take turns reading it. P.J. was a daily part of our home lives. Way back when, he visited Watertown High School as one of the career speakers that came to shine a light on various professions. He gave a small group of us a glimpse of the life of a journalist. Thanks for a meaningful life. Rest in Peace sir.

It was always great to see PJ whenever I showed up at the weekly meeting of the "old pros" in Watertown. He never complained about his latest issues. Always so upbeat and positive. I learned a lot from him. He often had something constructive to point out in a recent edition; I swear he read every word in the paper every day. And boy I loved hearing his stories about the good old days at the paper. I'll treasure those forever. Thanks, PJ.
