Phyllis E. Sheras, age 97 of Manistee, MI died Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at Green Acres Assisted Living facility in Manistee, with her close companion, Juan Torres at her side.
She was born on January 20, 1925 in Manistee, Michigan daughter of the late Anthony & Martha (Nowak) Wicinski. She attended St. Joseph School in Manistee and was a graduate with the class of 1942. During WWII she worked for Civil Defense Department spotting planes. Phyllis was employed full time by the Sears Catalog Department Store in Manistee. Before retiring after 20 years of service, she was promoted to manager and was one of the very few women who was successful enough to be a manager in a company where most of the managers at the time were men.
Phyllis married Bernard E. Sheras on May 30, 1968 in Manistee, Michigan. Bernard preceded her in death on October 26, 1993. Bernard and Phyllis, also wintered in Longboat Key, Florida, for many years. She enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Manistee Golf & Country Club, the Manistee, Michigan and Longboat Key, Florida Moose Lodge’s and a member of the Divine Mercy Parish of Manistee.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Arlene Sheras of Rockville, Maryland and Dr. Peter Sheras and Phyllis Koch- Sheras of Charlottesville, Virginia, two grandchildren, Dr. Daniel Sheras (married to Dr. Laura Sheras) of Raleigh, North Carolina and Sarah Sheras Kensell (married to David Kensell) of Los Angeles, California; four great-grandchildren, Isabelle and Scarlett Sheras of Raleigh, North Carolina, Willa and Fox Kensell of Los Angeles, California, her niece Nancy Hedstrom of Ludington, MI and her close companion, Juan Torres of Manistee. Several great nieces and nephews also survive her.
She was preceded in death in addition to her parents, by her husband Bernard and her sister and brother in-law, Irene and Arthur Gray and her brother Aloizy Wicinski.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, September 2, 2022 at 12:30 AM at Divine Mercy Parish Catholic Church in Manistee with Reverend Basil Lek celebrant. Burial will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery also in Manistee.
The family will receive friends at the church on Friday morning, one hour prior to the funeral Mass.
The Herbert Funeral Home of Manistee is in charge of funeral arrangements.
