Ralph Gronlie Hatlen passed away at home surrounded by family on October 29, 2021. He was born in Everett, Washington on July 23, 1930, the fourth of five children to “Jack” Gjert Hatlen and Rosella Gronlie. He was raised by his mom Agnes after his mother’s passing when he was very young. He attended school in Everett before going off to Pacific Lutheran College, then graduated with a Dairy Science degree from Washington State. After a stint in the Army, he earned an MBA from UW. Ralph married his PLC college sweetheart, Doris, and they were married for over 67 years until her passing last year.
He had a long and flourishing career at Kaiser Aluminum in various places around the United States, but mostly at the headquarters in Oakland, CA. After retiring he became a consultant and travelled for work to places like Indonesia, Belgium and Bahrain. Throughout his life, Ralph enjoyed carpentry and woodworking. He started with a carport at the family lake home when he was young, and then together with Doris, they built three homes in their retirement, lastly a beautiful 4 bedroom 7 bath house on the bluffs at Kayak Cove. Countless hours were spent constructing cabinets and furniture for the homes, and because he was generous with his time, many were the recipients of his handmade woodworks.
Ralph had an infectious laugh, loved to tell stories, and always had a positive attitude. His favorite pastimes were listening to nonfiction audiobooks and following the stock market. Together with Doris, they went on over 100 cruises, enjoyed fine dining and good conversation. He has a very close, large family and enjoyed many Sunday Suppers at Lake Stevens.
Ralph was devoted to his late wife Doris and he was a dedicated and loving husband father to his children Jeff (Liz), Teri (Joe), Craig (Susan), and Natalie (Carl); grandchildren Megan(Jess), Tyler, Andrea (José), Scott, Danielle, Jack (Ashton), and Cooper; and great grandson Adrian.
At Ralph’s request no memorial service is planned, but when you get the opportunity, he wanted you to raise a glass and toast to Happy Days. His belief was that whatever you do or wherever you go, make yourself happy.
