Redenia Camiolo Obituary

Mrs. Redenia Lynum Camiolo graced us with her presence for 71 years and transitioned to her heavenly home September 7, 2021 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. Her love and relationship with the Lord helped her to overcome many obstacles in her life. She persevered with grace and victory through a positive attitude and smile that not only helped her, but she shared her wisdom and experiences to uplift others. She truly believed and held on to the Word of the Lord and carried her favorite scripture Psalm 91 in her heart.

Redenia, affectionately known as Dee Dee/Mama Dee, was born on January 3, 1950 in Petersburg, Virginia to Elijah J. Lynum Jr. and Eugenia J. Lynum. She was the sibling to Lourdes Lynum Ramsey (Walter) and Mark A. Lynum who preceded her in death.

Redenia’s memory will go on through her husband Mario Camiolo; her beloved daughter Nia Lisby (Oliver Greg Lisby Jr.), her niece and nephews Paula Buchanan Coleman, Wade Buchanan, and Kristi Comvalius (Laurence); Redenia’s bonus family Genoviba R. Sanders, Elick Sanders, Era G. Edwards, and Caroline S. Price. A host of nieces and nephews.

Redenia attended Gibbons High School, Petersburg, Virginia (class of 1968). She was the first African American woman to graduate from this catholic school. After high school, Redenia assisted her parents with the family businesses and helped her sister Lourdes with caring for her nieces and nephew. In her twenties, she moved to Chicago, Illinois and returned to Virginia in the mid 1970’s.

Redenia spent over 30 years in the Restaurant/Hotel management industry as an Accountant for Thomas K. Skordas owner of Prince George Family Barbecue. In the later part of her life, she opened her first cafe called Dee’s Deli located in Richmond, Virginia. She loved to cook and to be in the presence of family and friends. As a visitor in her home, she was going to feed you a good meal and make you play her favorite board game “Rummikub”. She loved the holidays – especially Christmas but all others celebrated with a decorated table – from a perfect centerpiece, tablecloth, and set of matching napkins. Dee was also very gifted with gardening and planting flowers. She is probably most memorable for her style – she loved to shop.

Redenia was a faithful member of Higher Way Ministries under the leadership of Bishop Darren L. Gay Sr. and First Lady Danielle Gay. She loved her Higher Way family and served proudly as one of the Mothers of the Church. She rarely missed a service during the most challenging times of her health. She used her servanthood in women’s ministry programs, acted as a member of intercessory prayer teams, and was a Trustee for a local ministry.

Many people especially those who worked with her at Prince George Family Barbecue, Honey Bee’s Inc., and the Eagles Nest Lounge (Tri-cities) loved Dee Dee. We want to recognize the following loved ones who have been with Dee for almost a lifetime, Tom and Natasha Skordas

Chris (Katerina) Skordas, Delilah (Stanley) Taylor, Kenny (Kimberly) Russell, Anthony Russell, Adrienne Robinson Batts, Carlton Hobbs, Archie (Gerald) Love, Pamela Manila,  Gerri Lynn Barnes, Denita Davidson, Barbara Owens, Shanquita (Pooh) Robinson, and Diane Ryan

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday September 22, 2021 at 11 am. on the grounds of the Johnson Funeral Home, with Bishop Darren L. Gay, Sr., officiating. Burial will follow at the Dinwiddie Memorial Park. Public viewing will be held on Tuesday September 21, 2021 from 12 Noon to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

To hear your unique voice near was to know some of our favorite cousins had arrived. I could hear your voice over everyone when you'd say, "hey Aunt Dorothy." When things were the darkest and you could tell I was hesitant on matters, you'd always, always say, "I understand." Thank you for being that person who I can say I've never heard you speak ill of another. Rest in Power Dee Dee. And despite our shortcomings put in a good word for us remaining here. We need all the help we can get.
