Richard Arthur Honig, lovingly known as Pops, Poppy, and Chief, passed away on September 26, 2025, in Wilmar, North Carolina, at the age of 81.
Born on April 18, 1944, in Englewood, New Jersey, Richard lived a life of service, devotion, and joy. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 44 years, Louise Alice (Hershman) Honig, who passed in 2010. They were married on September 11, 1965, and together built a family rooted in love and laughter.
Richard is survived by his children: Debbie and her husband John Halligan, with their children Kiera (Dan), Sean, and Shannon (James) and grandchildren Juniper and Daphne; Sheila and her husband Patrick Wells, with their children Jessica (Carl), Christopher, and Matthew (Amy) and grandchildren Bayleigh, Hannah, Allison, and Parker; Michael; and Christine with her son Hunter. He will also be remembered by his loyal dog, Sandy.
A proud veteran, Richard retired as a Chief Petty Officer after serving 20 years in the United States Navy. Following his military career, he continued his service to others as a school bus driver and crossing guard for the Northvale, New Jersey school system, where he became a cherished part of the community.
Richard found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved attending bingo, cheering at high school football games, and stepping in as a mentor, “coach,” and friend to many in town. His gardens—bursting with flowers and overflowing with vegetables—were a source of pride and beauty.
Richard will be remembered for his dedication to family, his service to community and country, and his warm presence that touched so many lives.
In keeping with his wishes, Richard has been cremated, and a private family memorial will be held.
