Richard P. Ryerson, age 94, of Lebanon, NH, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on October 21, 2021.
Dick, also affectionately known as “Pop,” was born in Glen Ridge, NJ in 1927 to the late Ruth Patterson and Robert E. Ryerson. He attended St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH, as well as Princeton University, prior to serving his country during WWII, and then graduating from Wesleyan University. He was a tremendous athlete, excelling in baseball, football, hockey and golf. While at St. Paul’s School he received the prestigious Gordon Medal for best athlete, an award his son Rich would receive many years later, and to this day one of only a few father/son recipients. While at Wesleyan he was voted MVP in hockey his senior year. He was inducted into the NH Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006 for his outstanding contributions to the sport under the Coaching category.
Dick was an educator, coach, and athletic director at Tilton School for 12 years, where he was also inducted into the Tilton School Athletic Hall of Fame. He later taught Anthropology at Rundlett Junior HS in Concord, NH, while also coaching the Concord HS hockey team to two State Championships. Pop loved his Yankees, a good martini, fly fishing, and a round of golf with family and friends.
He was the adored husband of the late Barbara Starr Ryerson, his devoted wife of 59 years. Barbara and Dick enjoyed close to thirty years of retirement together in Daytona Beach Shores, Florida where they had many friends and enjoyed an active life. Dick was also predeceased by his brother Robert Ryerson.
Dick is survived by his four children, Starr Daniels and her husband Grover of Boston, MA, Rich Ryerson, Jr. and his wife Michelle of Lebanon, NH, Ann Garrett and her husband Chris of Concord, NH, and Tom Ryerson and his wife Christine of Pembroke, NH; seven grandchildren, Lauren Lampen, Julie Daniels, Gabrielle Shepherd, Hannah Monks, Ryerson and Brendan Garrett, and Cameron Ryerson; and his only great-grandson, Crew. He was extremely beloved by all who knew him.
A private service will be held for the immediate family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the NH Veterans Cemetery Association, 110 Daniel Webster Highway Boscawen, NH 03303 (NHVCA.org).

Star, Rich, Ann, Tommy and Family - Sorry to see this. He was a great hockey coach at CHS. He worked us hard, was an inspiration, and at the same time had a way of saying and doing things that created a great deal of respect for him, as a coach, person and mentor. I see where Tommy D. talks about waiting for the whistle at the end of practice. And I can still hear the words "On The Goal Line"..... We all knew what that meant....... Basically, skate until you drop. In the later years it was always great catching up with him at Beaver Meadow. Seemed like while he was trying to move people along on the course, we would undoubtedly hold some of those same people up, while we were reminiscing with him about the CHS days. All with a lot of laughs. The last time I had a chance to see him was at a Black Ice tournament. It was so great to see him. In addition to the great memories he has left with all of you. He has left a lot of great memories, and was a great mentor for all of us former CHS hockey players. Sorry for your loss.

Rich and Family,
Ben Potter and I send our sympathies and love to all. I hope that you remember Ron and Barry Harris from St. Paul's School in Concord. Both your parents were so kind to Barry as he skated his way into their hearts so long ago. Our sincere condolences go out to all of you at this time.

Thank you for your phone call Tommy. We send our sincere sympathy to all the Ryerson family from Dick’s friends on Prince Edward Island, Canada. We were neighbors of Dick’s when we vacationed with many others from PEI in Daytona Beach Shores. Dick enjoyed meeting all of us!
Through the years Dick welcomed our children and most of our grandchildren. He could converse with all generations but especially our grandsons who played sports!
We enjoyed Dick’s company every afternoon at 4:30. He told us often about how proud he was of his family and how he missed Barbara. But he told very little of his own accolades. We had to discover those for ourselves.
Covid has changed many things, but one thing we really missed was the 4:30 gathering outside 406 at Shores Club in 2019.
We have been blessed with wonderful memories of a special, gentle, man.
Sincere sympathy

Rich-Nanci and I were very sorry to read of the death of your father. He appears to have had a very fulfilling life and career and was an exceptional sportsman--and he was a NYY fan. Though I did not know your dad a Yankee fan is always a favored person in my view. You and your family were very fortunate to have him in your lives for so long. That may be of little solace right now, so soon after his death, but the memories will be cherished forever and will bring smiles to you, your siblings and the family. Our thoughts are with you and Michelle and the rest of your family. Al & Nanci.

I am an employee at the spruce Creek country club in Florida. I would work the pro shop every Monday morning. Mr Ryerson would stop in and hit a bucket of range balls. We would speak usually for an hour or so. He was an extremely kind man, and I missed him when he stopped coming by. Sorry for your loss.

Mr. Ryerson was my "advanced anthropology" teacher in Jr. High school and was one of those who just had a way of reaching his students -I loved his class and it is one I remember to this day. He inspired us to think beyond our own selves and be curious about the world. I even wanted to be an anthropologist for a while. I am so very sorry for your loss.

So sad to hear of Dick’s passing.
I have so many memories of our coaching hockey together. A great mentor and more important, a great friend. Such a full life, they don’t make guys like Dick anymore.
My sympathy to the entire Ryerson family.

My condolences to all the family and friends of Dick. He was a great man, father, and coach. He treated everyone with the most respect but also demanded your best effort in return. Even though it has been over 45 years since he was my high school hockey coach, I still remember the daily “Lightning” drills at the end of every practice!! We used to watch the clockknowing what was coming!! He taught a lot of us how to be the best we could be and over the years I always loved it when I ran into him so we could catch up on each other’s lives. He will be missed.

Mr. Ryerson was my Anthropology teacher in the mid-70's, and I still remember the hands-on "dig" he organized in the RJHS courtyard where our class went probing for pre-planted "artifacts". My condolences to his family and friends.
