“Chairman of the Board of The Cly-Del Manufacturing Company”
Robert W. Garthwait Sr., 90, of Wolcott, entered into the gates of heaven on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at Cheshire House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He was the loving husband of Marion (Lubyck) Garthwait of 61 years.
Robert was born in Waterbury on January 28, 1929, son of the late Clyde W. and Clare O. (Drufva) Garthwait. He graduated from Peekskill Military Academy, in NY, class of 1946, as a Lieutenant. In school, he was a member the Cavalry, Glee Club & Varsity Club and also lettered in lacrosse and soccer. He then served in the U.S. Army and was a radio operator in the Canal Zone, Panama during the Korean Conflict.
Robert’s wife Marion came to Waterbury from her home in Pottsville, PA in 1956 when her sister Helen called her to come observe the terrible damages of the flood of 55’. Once in Waterbury, she met Robert and never returned home. Bob loved golf and was a member of the Country Club of Waterbury since 1953, and once served as Chair of the Greens Committee. He also played for many years at Chase Golf Club, where he enjoyed playing in the Sunset League. Robert loved his family, community and country. A great believer in philanthropy, he gave to hundreds of organizations during his lifetime.
Robert began his career working at The Cly-Del Manufacturing Company in 1946. Alongside his father, Clyde W. Garthwait, who founded the company in 1939. Cly-Del is currently led by the 3rd & 4th generations of the Garthwait family. Cly-Del is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. He wanted to send thanks to all of its devoted employees.
Besides his wife Marion, Robert leaves behind to cherish his memory his son; Robert W. Garthwait Jr. and his wife Carlotta of Wolcott and his grandson, Robert W. Garthwait III. He was predeceased by his brother; Clyde W. Garthwait Jr. and his wife Fran.
The family would like to thank the staff at Cheshire House for their love and support given to Robert while in their care.

A very sad day, Mr Garthwait was a gentile man, a smart and very generous person. It was pleasure knowing that he trusted me with working on all his company vehicles at K&J Automotive, and a pleasure to do business with. He will surely be missed. My heart goes out to his wife and family who are also remarkable people.
