Silas Wilkins Obituary

Silas E. Wilkins passed away on February 1, 2017 with his loving family by his side. He was born on March 15, 1936 in St. Albans Vermont to George Walter Wilkins and Beatrice Viola (Cota) Wilkins. Silas grew up in Middletown and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1954. Silas was an outstanding football player and often told of the Wildcats exploits on the field. Silas worked for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft for 42 years where he made many life time friends. Silas enjoyed playing on the Pratt & Whitney softball league for many years.  In his retirement, Silas enjoyed tending to his garden, woodworking and spending time with his family.  He enjoyed his daily walks with his dog Bingo where he would make friendly conversation with everyone he met.

Silas married his high school sweetheart Mary Jane D’Elia on July 10, 1954 in Middletown. They were happily married for 63 years. Silas was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and served in the US Navy Reserve. Silas enjoyed coaching and for many years coached Little League, Ahern Whalen and Midget Football. Silas was a member of the committee that brought Midget Football to Middletown in the mid 1960’s.

Silas is survived by his spouse MaryJane (D’Elia) Wilkins, Daughter Deborah Pullum of Middletown, Son Gary E. Wilkins and his wife Rosemary of Middletown, Daughters Danette Marino of Middletown, Michele Wilkins Palmieri of Middletown, and his beloved dog Bingo; Sisters Janet Paole of Middletown and Judy Cot of Wethersfield, Eight Grandchildren, 11 Great Grandchildren and Many Nieces and Nephews whom he loved dearly.

To Gary and Si's family,

I had the pleasure of working with Si at Pratt & Whitney. He was my lead man many years ago. They don't make men like Si anymore. He was a good leader, a true gentleman and a friend. I was recently saddened to hear of his failing health but now with death comes freedom from all suffering. I pray that all his family find comfort in knowing that.

On a lighter note...Si was a "looker" all the ladies at work thought he was so handsome with a great personality. :)

God bless you all,
Sincerely,
Doreen Fama

Dear Aunt Jane and my family,

I send you my deepest condolences. I pray you feel the love and light of God in your darkest hours.

Uncle Si,

When we see each other again I should be able to hold that bowling ball over my head by myself, but who knows, I might need a little help. Love you always.

My love to everyone,

Mary Jane,
My heartfelt sympathy on the passing of your beloved husband. He was such a gentleman! Everyone who knew him was aware of the love he had for you and your family. I'll always remember the wonderful picnics on Grove Street and the beer-making adventure! Love to you all.

Michelle, Danette, Debbie, Gary, and Mom:

I am so saddened to know that your dad has passed but also am well aware that he fought a great fought and now is so at peace... Your dad became my surrogate dad throughout my High School years hanging on Grove Street with Michele A LOT! I could never have asked for a better second family to be a part of... Dad was one of a kind and a loving man I will miss. Mom - you have been blessed with a one-of-a-kind!!! My sincerest condolences to all.
