Stephen Howard Culotta, 63, of Hampton, died Friday, October 1, as a result of complications from a stroke. The son of Paul and Mary Howard Culotta of Hampton, he was a graduate of Hampton High School, class of 1976, as well as a graduate of Thomas Nelson Community College and Christopher Newport College, a member of the Intramural Volleyball Team, and of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity. He had been employed by Newport News Shipyard, later as a registered representative for First Investors Corporation, and as a substitute teacher for Hampton City Schools.
He is survived by his parents, his sister, Terry C. Ennis (Jim) of Hampton, and brother, Christopher P. Culotta (Patty) of Troy, Virginia, as well as a nephew, Christopher Ennis (Virginia), a step-nephew, Donald Ennis, and many cousins. Steve was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
The family is grateful for Steve's wonderful neighbors who have been so helpful, and to Jeff Sise, Steve's friend, whose help has been invaluable.
There will be a Celebration of Life at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in Hampton, on Sunday, October 10 at 3 p.m., followed by family visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to diabetes research or a charity of your choice.
In accordance with CDC recommendations, the family asks that masks be worn.

I am so saddened to hear of Steve's passing. We were friends at Hampton High and had many laughs at our table in Mr. Mann's art class. He even had me put his HHS class ring on, as was the ritual of having someone from the class ahead put the ring on and turn it. I was honored.
Over the years, after I moved to Northern Virginia, I would come home to Hampton to visit with my parents. I would see Steve out and about at the Oasis, Vancostas, and Belo. It was always a pleasure to run into him and have some smiles about good times at HHS.
It seems that the Lord needs some wonderful souls sooner than others, and that must be the case with Steve.
Godspeed, Steve, and be at rest with Jesus.

It was a pleasure being Steve's neighbor. He always spoke, waved, and would play with my nephew when he came over. He will be missed.

Worked with Steve at Phoebus. He was kind and always smiling—he offered lots of advice, and often a funny story to accompany his wise words. Please accept our condolences. Will keep your family in our thoughts and prayers.

Steve and I were fraternity brothers in college and roommates for a couple of years afterwards.
He was the most genuine guy I think I´ve ever met.
Quick wit, quick smile, quick laugh.
I have many many great memories of Steve.

My wife and I are so very sorry for the loss of Stephen. It´s been years since we grew up together in Hampton, however, Stephens enthusiasm and personality will always be remember as a great guy that was straightforward. Certainly he will be missed by all of his family members and friends. We are praying for his family and hope that god will provide guidance through these tragic times.

I will forever remember that beautiful smile and laughter. Steve was such a special young man. Jack enjoyed teasing him about his driving as a teenager, a story only we Boerners know and keep deep in our memories. I will miss that special "Hi".

Words cannot even express the sadness in my heart to hear of Steve's passing. Ive known the Culotta family my whole life from church but I really got to know Steve during my time working at the Oasis Restaurant back in the 90's. He would come in almost every Sunday and we shared a ton of stories and laughs together. There was just something about him that stood out above all others when it came to how quick witted and funny he was. There was an indescribable presence about him. Perhaps it was the signature beard and ponytail or calming voice he had. One of the fondest memories of my many years working at the Oasis was my conversations with Steve. I was in my late teens when I worked there and trying to find myself and place in this world like all teens do and I found just talking with him about anything and everything really helped me in my journey of self discovery. He was the absolute perfect combination of funny and serious. He knew how to really listen to someone when you needed to talk and knew exactly when and how to throw that witty joke in there, a truly rare quality. He is without a doubt on top of the list of my favorite people that I have ever met. He will forever be "the man"(the nickname my family gave him years ago). I will always be thankful for the wonderful memories with Steve, who truly is the man!!

Mary, we are so sorry to learn of Steve´s passing. I actually taught Steve when I was a long term sub for Stan Mitchum at Hampton High in 1976, and of course you worked with my husband Jim at Bethel. Please accept our heartfelt sympathies on the loss of your beloved son. Jim and Sheila

Mr. Culotta was often the substitute in my classroom when I was a teacher at Phoebus High Scool. I taught Business Education and naturally, Mr. Culotta gave the students advice on good business sense and life skills which only added to my lessons. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing and wish nothing but peace and comfort for his family in their grief.

I was so sorry to hear of the loss of my friend, Steve. We met when he was working at Phoebus HS and have continued to be friends throughout the years. He always brought me comic strips to enjoy and I hung them on the wall in my office. He would still mail them to me after he no longer worked there. I would have loved to have had another conversation with him. He will be missed.

My heartfelt sympathy to the family of Steve Culotta, he was such a very good guy. I always found him charming, clever, articulate and very cute. An all-around likable person. I will dearly miss receiving his entertaining holiday cards and those hilariously stupid but right on target postcard messages. He has “Divine Peace” now and so deserves it.

Steve was a great friend for 50 years. He never lost his love for life and others. His ability to crack a joke and make his friends laugh was a great present. I am shocked and saddened by his passing. The world feels different without my friend Cool in it.
