Stephen Gilbert

1948 - 2021

Stephen Kent Gilbert, 73, of Madison, Alabama, passed away on September 22, 2021. 

Visitation will be held Saturday, October 2nd from 2pm-4pm at Legacy Chapel Funeral Home in Madison, Alabama. 

Kent was born to Clyde and Capitolia Gilbert on May 3, 1948. He was a graduate of S.R. Butler High School in 1966. He married Nancy on April 7, 1990 in Huntsville, Alabama. Kent and Nancy liked to travel and spent many years raising Rachel in Germany. They traveled across Europe while living abroad. However, his favorite overseas trip was when Kent and Nancy went to China. They made sure to take Rachel on as many adventures as possible and take lots of beautiful family pictures.

In his younger days, Kent was a boat designer for Sea Ray. He spent his middle years being a stay at home dad to his pride and joy, his daughter Rachel. He attended UAH and was passionate about design. He was a talented artist and musician. Most of his life you would not find him very far away from a guitar. He loved to play and sing when his family was gathered together. He loved cars and motorcycles. He and his brothers would spend hours talking about anything with motors. He was a wonderful brother to his sisters. He was a father figure to all of the nieces and nephews. He is loved by many. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Capitolia Gilbert; older brother David Lawrence Gilbert; oldest sister Judith Miriam Broad; older sister Janice Gilbert Henry; oldest brother Joel Michael Gilbert; and beloved beagle, Izzy.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Gilbert; daughter Rachel Montgomery, and son-in-law, Tyler Montgomery; older sister Elizabeth Colleen Hands; younger brother Brian Franklin Gilbert; and many nieces and nephews. 

Kent’s family would like to extend thanks to the many family and friends who have offered condolences. We invite anyone attending the visitation to wear pink or a Hawaiian shirt in his memory.
