Stuart R. McAfee Obituary

CHAPEL HILL: It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Stuart McAfee of Chapel Hill after a brief illness at the young age of 67.

Stuart was born in New York City and was the youngest of three children to Horace J. and Kathryn Gage McAfee and was raised in Irvington, NY. Stuart attended Phillips Academy in Andover, MA and graduated from Harvard University in Cambridge, MA in 1969 (where he played rugby and sang with the Harvard Krokodiloes) and then studied Medicine in Bologna, Italy.

After returning to the USA from Italy, Stuart moved to North Carolina where he worked for Central Carolina Bank, Harris Distributors and SunTrust Mortgage. He retired in 2005.

Stuart had a grand passion for life and living it to the fullest. He loved the beach, the sun, making people laugh, singing whenever there was an opportunity, making people feel welcome and comfortable and traveling whenever and wherever he could. While you may not know Stuart by his name, you most certainly would recognize him by his generous laugh and warm smile. He will be missed dearly by all who had the fortune to come across his path.

Stuart is predeceased by his mother and father and his sister Mary Ann McAfee. He is survived by his brother William Gage McAfee and his wife Linda of Hong Kong, various cousins, nieces and nephews, his friend and former wife, Patty Balltzglier and his beloved cat Cricket.

A memorial service celebrating the fun and fabulous life of Stuart R. McAfee will be held on Saturday, June 20th at 2:00pm at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham, NC.

I met Stuart socially through Lee and Pam Williams many years ago and would run into him over the years. Stuart was never without his charm and humor and always left an impression! He will be remembered fondly.

Stuart and I met on a dating site. We had a marvelous connection and he came to visit me in March 2015. I loved his voice, his passion for politics, his ease of expressing himself and his sentimental side. I am beyond shocked to hear about his death and my heart is aching. I wish I had had the opportunity to meet all of the people he talked about - Patty, Gage, Linda, their children, Bill, Don and others.
Rest in Peace, Stuart. I will never forget you.

I especially remember the discussions Stuart and I had on politics. He liked to call me a "pink commie," so I, in return, called him a fascist, all the while knowing the comments were mostly in jest. We had a very good friendship. I enjoyed his singing, his light-hearted commentary on various topics. I'll miss him.

An unexpected email from a friend informed me of Stuarts passing. We spent a season of our lives together, lots of laughter and political debates!!! A passionate, free thinker and spirit, great singer, cook, and all around entertainer....I am so sad he is no longer with us....Hopefully he is in a better place...

Dear Gage,
Stuart's death was a shock to all. What a vibrant person! I still remember when you introduced us - a long time ago. He was ever so charming, I think it's a family trait. The Couch family always enjoyed seeing Stuart when he came to visit during his PA years. Know that we all are thinking of you and him and we send our love and prayers.
Peace to you,
Carol

Stuart was the first face I saw and person I met when I arrived in the Triangle for the Duke Childrens Classic in 1984, when he worked for Harris. Always a smile and always had a funny thing to say and compliment to offer. He will be missed!!!

So many fun memories of Stu from long ago. Friday lunches with Stu, Lee Williams and David Shaw were the best. Stu will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Me included. I know that Stu and Lee (his mentor) had a wonderful reunion on the 16th of May. Rest in Peace Stu. Hugs!
