SOUTH PORTLAND – Susie Curtis Mileson, 99, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2023, at her home; with her family around her.
Susie was born on May 16th, 1924, in Ashland, Maine, one of George and Ethel (Dobson) Curtis’ 11 children. She was raised on a potato farm there, graduating from Ashland High School in 1942. Upon graduation, Susie moved to Portland and worked several years at Liggett’s Drug Store on Congress Street and, for a brief time in Brookline Massachusetts as a nanny. During her single years in Portland, she and a friend once embarked on an adventurous, cross-country bus trip making stops in such places as Salt Lake City and Los Angeles. In 1953, Susie married Richard Mileson, a U.S. Navy sailor of South Portland. Now began her years as a “Navy Wife,” living in Boston, MA, Norfolk, VA and Crete, NE before settling in South Portland in 1967. During those years Sue and Dick started and began raising their family of 3 children, Donna, Bill, and Ray.
As her children grew, Sue was a full-time mom and later worked part-time at various South Portland retail stores. She enjoyed work and did so until her early 70s. Susie’s family came first, and she lived a contented, quiet life as wife, mother, and grandmother. She cared for and supported her family and helped them better themselves with education. In recent years, Susie found interest in Bible study.
Susie is predeceased by her parents, siblings: Sadie Brown, Lewellyn Curtis, Mabel McNally, Lillian Ward, Wesley Curtis, Lulu Boyles, Arthur Curtis, Georgia Bacon, Catherine Oakes-Boyles, Goldie Ellis and husband of 59 years, Richard. She is survived by her daughter Donna of South Portland, son Bill and his wife Jane of Portland and son Ray and his wife Debbie also of South Portland; grandchildren, Joe Mileson and partner Danielle Murray of Santa Fe, NM, Sarah Mileson, and fiancé Cody Couturier of Norridgewock, ME and Brad Mileson and partner Erin Maryzek of Somerville, MA. In-laws, Jim and Carol Mileson of South Portland, and several nieces and nephews also survive her.
The family expresses its thanks to Hospice of Southern Maine for their support during Susie’s final days.
Visitation will be December 11th, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland, with a funeral service to follow. A burial will be held in the spring at Highland Memorial Cemetery, South Portland.

Our sincerest condolences of your mother’s passing. I’m sorry we only found out today of her passing. she was a great lady. She was the quiet one in the neighbor hood except when she would yell at your Dad. Also enjoyed our talks across the fence. You all were very blessed to have such a great mother and (father). Our love and prayers to you all.

Dear Donna & family, I'm saddened to read of your mother's passing, so hard to say goodbye. I have fond memories of her in her kitchen, sitting at the table, asking what we girls were up to. Being a Navy wife, she kept us in line! Her longevity living to 99 years is wonderful, love her picture..she aged beautifully. Hold on too the warm memories you had with her, she is one of your angels now. Thinking of you as you go through this sad time.
With sincere condolences,
Kathy (Caldwell) Hewins
