Thomas Carey Obituary
Thomas (Tom) H. Carey, 85, of Middletown passed away peacefully on Saturday April 22, 2017.
Tom was born November 22, 1931 in Pocomoke City, MD to Clarence Edward Carey and Mary Ethal (Tray) Carey.
He served in the U.S. Army as a Radio Operator in Austria during the Korean War, headquartered 3rd Armored Division in Fort Knox, Kentucky. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Army Occupation Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
Tom worked for Diamond State Telephone Company where he met his wife, Shirley Durham. They have been married for over 60 years.
While at the phone company he worked his way up to supervisor and chief switchman. He also taught the company's safety courses and played baseball for the company for several years.
He and two friends founded the Delaware Bow Bender's Archery Club. In the early 1960's he and two friends contacted Robert Tunnel and came to an agreement to place their mobile homes on his property. This eventually grew into what is now known as Pot Nets.
He built his home in Middletown as well as a home on the lower eastern shore and a hunting cabin in Potter County, PA. He was also an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Edward Carey.
He is survived by his loving wife Shirley; one son, Lane Carey and his wife Diana; three grandchildren, Carl Tinsley and his wife Andrea, Renee Rynkowski and Remington Carey; two great grandchildren, Tyler Rynkowski and Aria Tinsley; his sister Joan Williams and her 2 children Jeff and Richard, and his sister in law Sarah Carey and her two children Caren and Chuck.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, May 3rd at 12:30 pm at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown, DE. Visitation will be from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm. Interment with military honors will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.
