Victoria Dolben Obituary

Victoria Kirmayer Dolben, a resident of Rockport, Massachusetts, and formerly of Reading, Massachusetts, passed away unexpectedly on March 22, 2024 at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was 56 years of age.

Tory was born in Salem, Massachusetts on November 17, 1967. She is the daughter of the late Catherine Kirmayer Dolben and Donald C. Dolben, and his wife Martha, of Concord, Massachusetts.

She attended Reading Memorial High School and Northfield Mount Hermon School; studied occupational therapy as an undergraduate at Tufts University; earned a BA with Honors in Public Relations and Marketing Communications at Simmons University; and a Master’s Degree in Health Communication from Emerson College.

Tory described herself as a serial entrepreneur. She was a successful massage therapist, and was the founder of Bequia Sweet Sweets during her years in Bequia, St. Vincent, and of Honu’s Hearth, a raw dehydrated foods business in Rockport, Massachusetts.

She will be remembered sweetly and with longing by those lucky enough to be tasters in her experiments: crackers, kale chips, chocolate, keto cookies, compotes, Dundee cake, jams, soups, hot sauce, epic tomato sauce…

Her interests were varied. She competed in shotput and discus, and enjoyed cycling and adventure - Tory rode the Bicentennial TransAmerica Trail in 1986 from Astoria, Oregon to Yorktown, Virginia, and walked the Camino de Santiago in 2001.Tory took pleasure in basket weaving and looming. She was an award winner at the Topsfield Fair for canning. She was keenly interested in Biodynamics, a holistic approach to gardening, food and nutrition. She sounded and sang with crystal singing bowls. Tory had an extraordinary voice.

Tory will also be remembered for her turtle sensibility. That it’s good to carry one’s home with one. Everywhere. That Turtle Speed…is speedy. And Turtle Life Wisdom: Turtles drop their eggs and go. They just go. At Turtle Speed.

Tory was a joyful spirit. She brought love and light everywhere she went. She was thoughtful, generous, supportive, and focused on the positives in life. She subscribed to the law of abundance, and she shared that abundance unreservedly - with family, friends and strangers.

She is survived by her siblings: Andrew K. Dolben and his wife Mary, of Northampton, New Hampshire; Deane H. Dolben and his wife Lacey, of North Andover, Massachusetts; Catherine J. Dolben of Ventura, California; and Zak Pritchard of Santa Monica, California. She is also survived by eight nieces and nephews, as well an honorary niece and nephew in her extended family.

She was dearly loved and is dearly missed.

Tory was truly a living angel on this planet. I am so grateful for her friendship. And so sad because she is gone and can’t imagine another human being like her. Love you Tory.

I just learned today that Tori passed away.
My heart is broken.

Tori was my roommate at NMH in Gould Hall. She and I would make each other laugh so hard no sound would come out. She was one of the funniest and kindest people I know. We would get into mischief together and just laugh about whatever shinanigans we had come up with that week.

She was one of the hardest working people I was around, and she made me work harder. She supported me when things got tough in my senior year, and I supported her when her mom passed.

We didn't always keep in touch as I had moved to California, but when we did, we got caught up quickly and went back to laughing about something.b She was also one of the fiercest competitors when it came to track and field. She was always determined to throw the shot put further than anyone.

It was that gift of her hard working mentality and competitiveness that got her to be such a success in her work. She will be missed greatly.

Today, I learned that my dear friend Tory passed away. I am heartbroken. I am devastated... for so many reasons.

I loved Tory. Tory made me laugh until my belly hurt. She welcomed me from my first days at Tufts University, and we spent years sharing stories, going on adventures, getting into mischief, and being friends throughout life's unexpectedly twists and turns.

Tory was kind and patient and had a generosity of spirit that made me a better human being. She had a way of doing this. Tory believed in abundance and creating joy for everyone around her.

Tory introduced me to so many things big and small - chocolate cheesecake at Mike's Pastry, the Boston Pops on the waterfront for the forth of July, and those lobster runs to Maine. OMG. She never judged me for eating everything....sometimes twice. I think we became better friends for it!

I am so grateful for the time I had with you my friend. And so regretful for the time I didn't take advantage of.

I will always love you. I will always remember you.

It's a hard loss to take. I met Tory her senior year at NMH. We kept in touch over the years, visiting every so often in MA, cooking and putting up food or here in Maine, picking apples and making applesauce. She gave massages to Kath and I the morning of our wedding in 1997 and led a small choir singing Dona Nobis Pacem at the ceremony. She shared stories of her mother, who had died many years ago. She had a lovely home in Rockport MA in the last few years and I got to visit her there a few times. She was so warm and welcoming to all. I wish I could give her one more hug. Listening to the Northfield Benediction again helps bring the tears https://www.facebook.com/NMHschool/videos/10150789478403557/?__cft__[0]=AZXbi2_i3sC5Se4weT5EasXubbDzIK0iTQXbpdVbahk6WdO_sjujW-l64RF8VScK0cWgMJ9FHLoGhnTWrSeKXPB7s0S2jwTy5V24nwDZwgRyD5dqKadXOu_TUWe3fC3UOW8&__tn__=R]-R

Hugs, Kisses & Tears to Tori's family. I met Tori at the Spaulding Rehab. in Charlestown after she lost her leg. We became instant friends. The thought of Tori leaving us saddens me. I will miss her dearly. Until we meet again my dear friend - may you run freely thru the fields of wild flowers with the sun shining upon your face.

Tory was one of my closest friends. Her impact on my life was huge and I am devastated by her death. We had plans to catch up when she got back from her trip to Colorado, to have lunch in Worcester or Framingham soon, to have dim sum with Bridget in the next few months, and to go to Hawaii together some day. We had so many adventures together and she introduced me to so many new experiences. She was the first person I met when I got to Boston in 1997. We lived in the dorms together and our friendship grew. She taught me how to eat lobster, introduced me to dim sum and fresh cannolis from Mike’s, and taught me how to pronounce everything the New England way. I equally enjoyed puttering around the kitchen being her prep cook as well as our many trips to Maine. She was generous, thoughtful, caring, and always a support. She held Bridget within a week after she was born and treated her like a treasured niece. As our lives changed, our friendship grew and deepened. I would not be the person I am today without her in my life. I am forever grateful and thankful for the incredible friendship we had and the time we spent together. I wish it could have been more.

Tory, the memory of your kindness will last me a lifetime. You are such a bright light and this world will be forever dimmer with you gone. Rest In Peace, my friend. Thank you for sharing your light with me. I will always remember our work for Honus Hearth together and our long enlightening chats.
