Virginia Awakuni Obituary

Virginia Patricia Awakuni, 73 of Burkburnett, Texas joined her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, June 23, 2023.

The family will receive friends from 6pm to 8pm on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at Owens and Brumley Funeral Home in Burkburnett, Texas. Funeral services will be held at the Church at Sheppard, 2101 Puckett Rd. Wichita Falls, Texas on Friday, June 30, 2023, at 2pm with Pastor Mark Mackey officiating. Interment will follow at Burkburnett Memorial Cemetery.

Virginia, better known as Jenny, was born April 27, 1950, in Warrington, England to Kenneth Franklin Hampton and Mary Wade Hampton (Anderson). In 1955, Roy and Betty Brown of Burkburnett adopted her and her brother. Jenny graduated from Burkburnett High School in 1968. Jenny gave birth to two boys from a previous marriage and later moved to Logan, Utah. She worked at Utah State University where she would eventually meet the love of her life of 40 years Russell Awakuni. Russell and Jenny had a son in 1985. Jenny would then go on to pursue her degree in nursing from Weber State University in Utah. Later, Russell, Jenny and sons would all eventually move back to Burkburnett, Texas. Her first job in Texas was at Wichita General Hospital in 1992. Soon after, in 1995, Jenny would become the nurse at I.C. Evans Elementary where she was known as Nurse Jenny for the next 26 years. Jenny retired from Burkburnett ISD in 2021. In 2010, Jenny reunited with her birth mother who shortly passed away in 2012. With this rekindled relationship, she gained a whole new family in England and found a sister and brother she talked with regularly. She then traveled to England to meet them all and took her sons to meet them as well.  Jenny was regularly active and never liked to just sit around. She took pride in her yard and loved to work in the garden. She was adamant about exercising and before she became ill, she was doing CrossFit at the age of 72. Jenny was the best cook. She liked to bake and send samples to her children any chance she would get. Jenny loved her Children and Grandchildren. She supported her children in all that they did and hardly ever missed a chance to watch her grandchildren on the sidelines. She was involved in church all her life and always wanted to serve other people. Not only did she love to help people, but she also loved animals. She always had a full house of dogs and would feed stray cats. She was a giver to everyone and expected nothing in return. Jenny was a loving wife, mother, Grandma, Nana, sister, aunt, cousin, niece, daughter, and friend to all that knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth Franklin Hampton, Mary Wade Anderson, Roy and Betty Brown. Her Grandparents, Wilson (Bill) Wade and Mary (Molly) Potts. Her Aunts Patricia Wade (Tovey) and Ann Wade (Evison).

She is survived by her husband, Russell of Burkburnett; son, Michael Montgomery of Paris, Texas; son, David Montgomery and his wife Becky of Burkburnett; son, Eron Awakuni and his wife Amanda of Holiday; brother, Kenny Brown and his wife Linda of Burkburnett; half-sister, Lois Stuckey of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; half-brother, Tanner Newsham and his wife ChiChi of Tallahassee, Florida; Grandchildren, Joseph Montgomery, Jonathan Montgomery, Kai Awakuni, Max Awakuni and Hallie Awakuni; her beloved first, second and third cousins in England,  her nephews their wives and children in Texas and nephews in Louisiana.

Jenny was such an inspiration. I always heard wonderful things about her life and who she was outside of the gym. Inside of the gym, she was unstoppable. We loved when Jenny was in class! Her presence of energy and warmth filled the room. I’m grateful to have met Jenny, coached her, and carry that friendship with me. May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

I worked with Nurse Jenny for 6 years at IC Evans Elememtary School. She was kind, loving, and ever watchful over the students. When I was having some health problems, she counseled me, encouraged me, and helped me through it. I considered her a great friend and I will miss her so much. My prayers are with the family and may the Lord’s grace be with you all as you go through this time of loss.

Cousin Jenny came into our lives 10 years ago. Luckily we have spent many happy hours talking about our lives and our widespread family. We discovered a wonderful lady, with a loving family who was actively involved in her community - where it appears she was loved by all. Fiercely determined, genuinely caring, daring, kind, loving and loved. We will miss her and will always remember her.
Love to all the family. M&L

I met Jenny in 1999 as a new employee at IC Evans. She was my school nurse for 19 years there. In my mind she was the epitome of strength with a generous dose of blunt truth. She heard me vomiting in the teachers’ restroom on the my second day of working in the school and said if I wasn’t pregnant I had to go home (despite my desire to be “strong” and stay- I was new to kid germs).

It’s unbelievable to me that she’s gone. I’m so very sorry for the grandchildren. She was a carer and fixer of problems and they’re going to miss out on so much of that.

Please give my love and condolences to the family while we are out of town and unable to attend the services.

Godspeed, Nurse Jenny ❤

We shared some good times and tough times during our careers as nurses in the OR. I wouldn't trade a single one of them. Jenny had a way about her that made you want to be around her. She is beautiful on the inside as well as the outside. She will be missed.
