Vivian Payne Obituary

Vivian Scoggins Payne, 77, of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born in Rutherfordton, North Carolina in 1948 to the late Sam and Ruby Scoggins, Vivian grew up with a gentle spirit and a deep love for reading and poetry, words and stories that brought her comfort throughout her life.

As one of twenty siblings, family was the center of her world, and that devotion never faded. In 1972, Vivian married Robert A. Payne, and together they welcomed three sons. Nothing meant more to Vivian than time spent surrounded by her family and her faith.

She proudly served for over ten years with the Kings Mountain Police Department as a telecommunicator, dedicating herself to her community with quiet strength and compassion.

A woman of strong faith, Vivian was a devoted member of her church, where her belief in God guided her life and brought her peace. She found joy in singing hymns, cooking meals for those she loved, writing, and losing herself in a good book. These passions, and the love behind them, live on through her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Ruby Scoggins; her beloved husband, Robert A. Payne; several siblings; and her daughter-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Payne.

Vivian leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion. She is survived by her sons, Robert C. Payne, Travis Payne, and Jonathan Payne; her grandchildren, Lorin Payne, Isaiah Payne, Gabrielle Lopez, Blaze Payne, Nathan Payne, Lily Payne, Corey Payne, and Summer Payne; her great-grandchildren, Salem Widener and Rohan Lopez; and her sister, Wanda Lane along with many extended family members and dear friends who will forever hold her memory close.

Though she is no longer with us, Vivian’s love, kindness, and gentle spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 at 3:00 PM at Midview Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, NC, with Pastor Mike Rice officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Midview Baptist Church Cemetery.

We met Vivian and Robert at the original Midview Baptist Church. They were kind and humble people, and they were wonderful Friends to me and Jerry. You did not have to be around Vivian long at all to know that she was a Christian who loved Jesus with all of her being, and that she loved you. Robert either, but he was just a much quieter person. Until we get to Heaven, I don't think I will ever hear anyone sing "The King is Coming" as beautifully as Vivian did!

Praying for her family and friends. May you Rest in Peace, Precious Lady!

My Moma, Corky, and Aunt Vivian were raised more like sisters than Aunt and niece. Moma loved to sing with her and listen to her sing. She had the sweetest soul and am blessed she is totally whole. Aunt Vivian was a true Southern Belle. She loved big and was a blessing to us. She will be missed.
The picture is Moma and Aunt Vivian December 2023. A slew of us gathered at a Mexican Restaurant and enjoyed lunch and then went back to Aunt Wanda’s and visited. Great memories.
May we find our peace in the hope of Christ. Because she believed in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, and Christ was born, raised as a man, died on the cross for our sins, and was raised from the dead, we can have eternal life. If you don’t know Jesus as your personal Savior, do that now. The best gift anyone can give to Aunt Vivian is to meet her in glory.
What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8

Outstanding lady! I was a member of KMPD along with Vivian. She was our telecommunicator and she treated us young officers as her children! Very caring! Prayers for the family

Vivian lived close to us when I was around 12 or so. She was the sweetest friend. We had fun memories singing, laughing and talking girl stuff. She will always be a real blessing in my life. It has been a while since I have seen her but she will forever be in my heart.
