Wanda's Obituary

Wanda Chmiel, 81, of Lemont passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025 with family by her side after battling dementia. She was the adored wife of the late Richard Chmiel. She is survived by her only child, Peter Chmiel and his wife Julie Chmiel of Lemont and her two grandchildren whom she loved immensely, Isabella Chmiel and Brady Chmiel. She was the daughter of the late Julian and Maria Bulgajewski. Dear sister of the late Ziggy (Diane) Bulgajewski of Chicago, Casey (Darlene) Bleski of Lockport, Lester (Judy) Bulgajewski of Chicago, and the late Irene (late Ronald) Rehder of Minnesota, and the late John “Bugsy” Bulgajewski. She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews. Wanda was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1951. She attended St. Ann's Grammar School and graduated from St. Ann's High School in Chicago where she lived before marrying the love of her life and settling in Westchester, Il. together. Wanda was widowed for 30 years dedicating her life to raising her son. She moved to Lemont to be with her family once her health started failing so she could be cared for and spend time with her grandchildren. She was a great storyteller and enjoyed sharing memories of her late husband with the kids to keep his memory alive since they never had the chance to meet him. She was also known for sharing exaggerated stories about their dad growing up. She had the most contagious laugh that was so loud it made everyone around her laugh. She was a homemaker and worked as a secretary for Loyola Hospital in Maywood for many years before retiring. Wanda was an avid “antiquer” who loved going on trips to find unique pieces to use to decorate her home. She was extremely talented with design and found joy in organizing and cleaning anything and everything she could find. She was an amazing cook who made the best perogies from scratch and was well known for her tasty deserts she impeccably crafted for parties. She also loved hosting holidays that brought the family together. She will be greatly missed. Wanda will be buried on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 and laid to rest with her husband at a private graveside ceremony being held at Resurrection Cemetery in Justice, Il.
